I've been wondering for a couple of days what the mods are thinking of doing with the 4e forum and all its offspring when June 6th rolls around. I'm curious how things are going to change around here, or if they will change at all.

As far as I can tell, the vast majority of the forums are largely edition-proof, which seems to be a good thing for most people and a draw to the site in general. The most notable mechanics-heavy exceptions are D&D Rules and D&D 4th Edition.
I could see this being a useful breakdown and (more importantly) requiring minimal work to implement:
1) D&D Rules is renamed to D&D Past Edition Rules.
2) Create a new forum called D&D Rules (for 4th edition since it's becoming the current version, and blank slates are kind of cool).
3) D&D 4th Edition is renamed to D&D 4th Edition Speculation Archive and moved to a sub-forum of either D&D Rules or the Archive.
The speculation is interesting and totally worth keeping, but it'll no longer be a current topic once 4th is actually out. It's got a built-in expiration date.

I think it would be good to leave 4th Edition seperate from General and Rules (both 4th and 3.x forums) for at least a few month after June 6th. The reason I see for this is that in addition to rules questions there will be ton of threads disscussing merits or problems with this and that, but not neccesarily rules related. To merge that with general will result in non-4e threads being overwhelmed and buried while some of us are still interested in 3.x for the time being.

Ah, the age-old fast bandaid or slow bandaid problem. It's gotta come off eventually!
I'm not switching to 4e for at least a few months, but I'd say that there's practically enough material out right now to call it the current edition and update the forum structure accordingly. Fast bandaid for me...

Even with the houserules subforum, the 4E forum has a lot of traffic. Creating a seperate rules forum (or moving those posts into the rules forum) would help with that.
And the rules specific questions will just explode as people actually start playing.
4E has rituals, use them, they're magic; Want to see the greatest thing you will ever see? then click; You can use “Earth” as a D&D setting; Origins of The Rouse; (look for it) The Rouse responds; (look for it) One can appreciate both old and new D&D.
I'm with Brown Jenkin on this. I would suggest keeping the current 4e forum for a few weeks after release, and create a separate 4e rules forum (I do like the idea of a "Past Edition" rules forum). After some of the initial fervor slows down, close the 4e forum and go back to posting "general" topics in the General Discussion forum with a 4e tag available for threads like "Help me design a Skill Challenge."
