[OT] Annoying off topic posts.

Yes, I am aware of the self contradictory concept of this post.

But could people stop posting OT stuff? It seems to me that there would be places to put OT stuff where OT meant ON TOPIC. I think death announcements are OK, and letting friends know whats up is too. But do we need stuff like "hey this guy is stupid" or "I think Scooby Doo is neat" or what ever. Also, somthing else has been getting on my nerves. Its the people that say somthing it OT when it really isn't. I like to think that on topic in the general PRG discussion area is anything remotely related to RPGs. So if you want to post the lyrics to "always the first to die," or some paraody of a song that makes it about Gaming, its not relly OT. OT is talking about Eighteen Wheelers without any relavence to a game. Its posting a thread asking people what their favorite motor oil is cause you want to know what to put in your car. Thats off topic. So lets keep the OT stuff OT and the OnT stuff OnT. There's no need to go mixing them up.

Aaron.

But, but... If I want to know what is the best oil for my car, it's in order to go buy RPG books faster! It's not really OT, isn't it?

Archibald : "Wait, you mean it's not a flying tadpole?"
Turpin : "I hate you Archie, I hate you so much..."

That is why people put the [OT] Warning sign... so those who dont like it dont read it.

I would say the number of OT arent big and many of them are funny/relevant/useful and help make this a neat board to visit. Any way the moderators have been very efficient at closing threads that dont deserve to be here... so loosen up man. This is an old complaint and its been done over many times.

(Moderators please delete this OT post...

Even worse, it would be on topic in the Meta forum

I don't usually have a problem with [OT] flagged posts... I don't even have a problem with the occasional erroneous [OT] flag (needed/not needed issues)...

My "bugbear" are posts titled one thing, and they turn out to be something else all together A vague post title doesn't bother me, a misleading (if not deceitful) one does! I know topics often dift away from the initial issue--such is the nature of human communication--and that can be entertaining of itself. It is the initial post and its title I am refering to. I think most ppl are "good" about this. But there are some instances that really grate... Has anyone else encountered such "bugbears"? Do admins/mods here watch out for this?

For example: d20 flaws? Well this veered off at the start!
So... Maybe I'm too fussy?

Ala the Simpsons;

"Just don't look! Just don't look!"

No one says you have to read them. And I seriously doubt that the 3/4 of a second that it takes to see the "[OT]" tag and move on is eating into your valuable time.

This is a community. Of course we are often interested in sharing other experiences (beyond D&D, that is) with each other.

I'll do you one better, jester47 -- this post really belongs in the "Meta" Forum!

and seriously, I like the OT posts! They are marked that way for a reason, as you know. We admittedly here are self-policing about the number of OT posts up at one time, as the mods asked us to watch them -- thus I don't post one unless there are none currently on the first page, or unless I REALLY want to know something from my fellow message board members.

There are MANY knowledgeable and talented people here, yourself included, and I (and others) value their opinions on some things besides gaming. This board evolved into a COMMUNITY, and a community sometimes talk about things besides gaming. Even our moderators will engage in wildly off-topic stuff time to time.

What gets MY goat are spam messages and web jokes re-posted. I have no use for these, and I wager the majority of people here do not, either. But if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. I don't have to look at those threads and waste my time, instead focusing on topic that DO interest me.

Remeber this: OT thread do not in any WAY, SHAPE, or FORM stop other valid posts from appearing here. If it's marked as OT, then it can be easily mentally "kill-filed" and forgotten.

If there's one dragon, it's a solo monster.
If there's five dragons, they're standard monsters.
If there's a dozen dragons, either most of them are minions or your DM is tired of the campaign.
