MetaPost comments and questions about the messageboards and other parts of EN World. If you have a problem, this is where to go. Moderator email addresses are posted here.
I know the terms meanings in my own mind, however, on other messageboards, the terms differ. I trust the Super-Mods here, because they have performed quite flawlessly at this job, IMO.
However, other boards are less controlled, or over controlled. Some message boards don't allow links that lead to OT information, and others don't allow links to On Topic information on other websites. Though that's not what I'm asking...
What is the difference between a Flame and a Rant, and what is allowable, vs. Not (in Flames and Rants I mean).

There are no specific rules. The moment you have specific rules, people start finding gaps, trying to get around them, arguing about them and what should/should not be there and so on.
So instead, we just have the "grandmother" rule, which is deliberately vague. Basically it goes like this: don't post anything which would offend my (or your, or anybody else's) grandmother. The final arbiters of what would or would not offend the grandmother in question are the moderators.
In general, err on the side of caution and you'll probably be OK.

And there was me thinking it was just Eric's grandmother we weren't to offend

What job - flaming and ranting?

Actually, don't flame or rant. Present a problem like ranters do, but actually take a useful step forward and offer a solution. I really don't like people who rant just to rant. It's pretty pointless and it solves nothing. Identify the problems and offer solutions, it's the constructive way to go.

/me bows.
Thank you, sir, I do try to share the few things I know with the masses. If there were two lessons I learned growing up they were common curtesy and solving problems is better then complaining about them.

I know... Heh. We talked about it in that thread, I think...

hehe, my grandmother was a religious nut. She would be offended by any mention of demons, devils, magic, sex, chainmail bikinis, cod pieces. So no more talking about those.
