Netscape problems

I'm having problems with netscape 6

I've noticed for a while that sometimes when I load a page that gets updated once in a while(e.g. a d20 publisher site) I've been loading up old versions of the site that don't contain the latest updates.

It doens't happened with all sites.

REcenlty, I noticed I wasn't loading up the latest updates at the Troll Lord and Mongoose sites. I fixed the problem there by hitting the 'home' link on the site and then resettign the bookmark.

However, just recently I noticed I wasn't getting updates from Necromander Games. I hit 'home' but it didn't work. My only option was to view the site with another browser.

I've just about had it with netscape and am ready to switch browsers, btu I have been a loyal user for a while and I have loads of bookmarks saved. Any suggestion on a fix?

Try downloading Netscape 7.0 -- works fine for me.

I've actually had this problem with IE too. For me, the Yahoo front page is stuck on St. Patrick's Day 2001. No matter what I do, clear the cache, clear cookies, reset the bookmark, it's still stuck. As far as I know it hasn't happened with any other site. I even upgraded IE to a newer version, thinking that might be the problem. No dice.

So I wonder if it isn't a browser problem after all, but some other part of the bloated monster known as Windows that is causing it. Of course, I don't have enough knowledge of Windows to go poking around in the registry, which is probably what I would have to do to fix it.

Advice welcome.

I currently don't have any problem (NS 7), but I used to have it occasionally in the past. Using IE or NS made no difference, so I'm pretty sure the browser isn't to blame. Some obscure windows setting maybe, or your ISP caching the pages... I really have no idea.

In any case, definitely switch to NS 7. While NS 6 is about on par with IE in terms of features, NS 7 is simply and outright better from many points of view. I especially love tabbed navigation. Plus you get to ditch that virus incubator called Outlook.

Thanks for the advice; I'll go get Netscape 7.

I'm glad to hear the browser is probably not the problem, I didn't really want to switch with all the bookmarks I have.

I've heard some people recommend Opera. Anybody know about that browser?

Actually, IE has a wizard to import bookmarks into its favourites folder. Say what you will about M$, they go out of their way to make it easy for users of competing products to defect. In fact, they're infamous for it.

Opera has been my main browser for about a year and a half. I absolutely love it.

Like the latest Netscape / Mozilla versions Opera aims for standards compliance. It's also extremely configurable and includes numerous keyboard shortcuts so you can use it entirely mouse free if you desire.

Opera's biggest weakness is that it doesn't handle a lot of Javascript well. Some people also object to the choice of using it as an ad-supported version, or paying about $40 US for registration.

If you're curious, the ad-supported version is available for free download at www.opera.com. It should import your Netscape bookmarks for you. It did mine.
