Eric's Rules Review, or Have You Hugged a Mod Today?

Thanks again Eric for setting a standard of behavior that has produced a great site. Thanks again to Morrus and mods for their work in preserving that standard.

Keep it clean: Don't use obscenities, don't use clever tricks to run around the profanity filters, and don't link to sites with inappropriate content. The "acid test" Russ and I use is the "Grandmother Rule" -- if it would be inappropriate to say to or show to either of our grandmothers, don't do it. I want a typical 13 year old kid to be able to come here and participate if they want to without feeling uncomfortable. This should be a minor-friendly place. Think about it this way: how do you act around strangers or work acquaintances? You watch your language and you're on your best behavior. That's the ideal we're shooting for here.
Isn't it kind of hypocritical to say that and then allow discussion about the BoVD and BoEF to take place at all?

In the same vein, should there be a place at all for Vile material in these forums?

To get right to the point, would your grandmothers really find nothing at all to object to in those two products?

Yeah, I know, it's put us in a bit of a pickle. I'm trusting that Russ will be giving the mods a bit more guidance in this area in the near future.

Are the discussions of these products vile? Are the products vile even? One product mentioned was nothing more than a marketing strategy stuck to the front of a book to try and get it to sell more, it really wasn't all that (yes I own the BoVD and have read it several times), the hype was much worse than the actual book. That's a old issue that's already come and gone too.

The other was, well you may have me there, that one is sort of skirting the boundaries of what's acceptable here, gee it's hard to come up with a good arguement for it,..... it's on topic.... That's about all I can come up with to defend that, of course the discussion of it wasn't all that bad and it seems it was heavily watched by the moderators. What topics should and should not be allowed and what people can say in those questionable threads should be left up to the moderators and they seem to continually do a good job of controlling these type of threads. Some kind of warning needed to be attached to the photorapher's link for sure though, it was definatly not a acceptable link to have here.

Obviously, I am not trying to tell Eric or Morrus what to do. Their vision guides these forums, not mine.

I am just trying to get some clarification on this issue. The rules that Eric posted say one thing, but the message board activity that was / is being allowed seems to say another.

Eric answered my question to the best of his ability and we will hopefully see the official policy regarding these topics in the near future.

(edited to remove a sentence that I just didn't like)

I don't think acknowledging the existence of the product, or talking in broad strokes about what may be inside is a problem. Take the topic of seduction. While obviously going into details on the activities involved is inappropriate, the simple concept of tempting one sexually is a pretty PG thing. I guess the point is, no, I don't think allowing broad discussion on the BoVD and BoEF is hypocritical. Most of the moderation in those threads has been cooling off tempers and trying to head off personal attacks--not telling people to watch their language and avoid crude topics.

Thanks to our Moderators and Administrators

Thanks, Eric.

I think that such a reminder is necessary. Some of the threads have degenerated into name calling and have been closed.

Personally, I think it is up to us as individual posters to try to set good standards in our own posts. For myself, I do throw out an occassional reminder that we need to keep the discussions friendly and respectful.

Dinkeldog, excellent post. I think there are many subjects that can be discussed here, such as the BoEF or BoVD, where it is unnecessary to go into explicit details.

I like coming to a place where I can expect to be treated with some level of respect. Most people seem to enjoy this as well.

So, in summary, thanks.
