How do I search these forums?
I'd rather not ask a question that's been answered before, but when I choose search from the forum menu at the bottom, it says I don't have access to that page.
Are these forums searchable?
Hi kwiqsilver,
You need to be a Community Suppoeter to access the Search feature. It's a $35 annual fee. But, if you just ask for what you want, a Supporter can probably do the search for you.
A fine question. We used to have an explanation on this right at the top of the page, but it disappeared in our recent software upgrade. Partially because it's resource intensive, searching is available (along with custom titles and a few other fun perks) to community supporters. There's a link under the EN World pulldown menu above.
If you can't afford to and are looking for something in particular, though, just post in this forum. Folks are pretty friendly, and generally someone will be happy to do a search for you. You can also sort a forum by topic, views, thread originator, replies, and the like to try and find particular threads.

A note about that (perhaps in place of the search page, for non-members) would be a good idea. I'll mooch for a little while, and if I like what I see, I'll join.
But it's a well known fact that no one reads sticky threads.
True, because of reverse psychology. You say "read this!" and people think "oh, it's boring management thingies, I'm not concerned". You say "please do not read this", and people think "but why am I not supposed to read this?" and they click.
So, you should do a sticky thread alright, but label it something like "ignore".

I think if you labelled it right, something along the lines of "Having trouble searching? Read here," then more people who actually came to Meta to ask about board problems would read it.
But yeah, I second the vote that "ignore" is the best bet for a title.
I'll mooch for a little while, and if I like what I see, I'll join.
Either way, you're more than welcome here. Go have fun.

maybe the FAQ could be updated with this info. there is an entry there about searching, but doesn't say anything about having to be a community member.
Well, for the moment I've restored the reminder that you have to be a community supporter for search, who's online and Private Messages. There was also a 4th one I think - Oh yeah, custom user titles. Just a sec, I'll throw that up too
