Code Tag creating tabs?

Something about the Code tag does not seem to work quite right... It seems that four spaces in a row generate a tabulator, which is sort of nice, but can make lining up text pretty hard in some cases.

  1 space
   2 spaces
    3 spaces
 	4 spaces
 	 5 spaces

I mean, I can work around it, but it is a bit annoying. Is that a problem on my behalf, or is that a general setting?
