So do I. I don't see the need to drop $25 for a discount card where I'd have to buy a whole lotta books just to break even on it...
No clue to the benefits.
In my case, I live with a college student who has a one-hour train ride into Boston each day, then another hour back. He can finish a book in three days easily. I barely buy books for myself anymore because I can't keep up with him, and I want to read all of the books he has.
If you're already buying tons of books, get the card and you'll save money. If you're not buying tons of books then the card likely won't do you any good.

You do get discounts without the coupon. Somebody already mentioned, but you get 10% of paperbacks and even more off of hardcovers. That's a normal, everyday benefit to the card. The coupons are just extra.
Huh, their website doesn't mention this. Is that only on the website? I never received a off-the-top discount when I used it in store.

Maybe we're talking about different things. I'm talking about the Barnes and Noble card, which definitely has off-the-top discounts.

I have the B&N card. It's paid for itself in the sheer number of children's books I buy for my son. Then again, I say they're for my son. Actually, they're for me and my wife... I can only stand reading Dot the Firedog so many times before I go crazy.

Ask him if he wants to sell his books that he has already read. Chances are he would like the money for his college expense if not some pocket money to tide over.

Or if he is like me he will fight tooth and nail before he would ever let anyone sell his books.

No way, he's not selling those books until I'm done reading them.
Neither one of us is one to part with books, anyway. We keep having to buy new bookshelves to fit them all.

Pretty much. I easily buy $250 worth of books in a calendar year myself, more like $500-$600 at B&N (which has a location by my apartment, and by my office...it's like they're stalking me!).
I wish I remembered to print out the coupons, though.

We live in the same apartment... I've bought half of his books for him using the gift certificates from the B&N credit card I have... why would I need to buy them from him?

Never mind.

Maybe it would make more sense if I said we're practically married. We're at that phase of the relationship where separating "mine" from "yours" seems kinda petty. They're really "our" books, he just picked them out and read them first.

I also save a boat load of money on the B&N card. One good things is buying online. The prices can be significantly lower than in the store, and if you buy two books or more, the shipping is free. And the discount on the card works, too.
I never had a B&N card. Even before Amazon, I bought a lot of books but I don't think I spent over $300 a year on them which is what it would have cost to break even, much less pull ahead. It's rare these days that I'll buy a book outside of Amazon (the main reason is that in my city, sales tax is a full 10%; an Amazon book at 35% off is almost half price for me), I'll go to Books-a-Million. I have some weird promotional card from them - it's all gold - and apparently it's a perpetual 10% off card that isn't offered anymore but oddly enough is still honored (some of the older store clerks ooh and aaahh over it; it's weird). And it was free at the time. Even if I didn't have that, the BAM card is $15 for 1 year.
