My destination: Los Angeles, CA, attending the Microsoft Professional Developer Conference. Since this is my second US visit in 2 years, I must say, my job has its perks.
The conference looks pretty busy - and I still don't feel like I have a clue what to expect, what sessions I'll attend and when I'll try to "socialice" or "network" (or how to do the latter - hey, I am just a simple software developer, not an executive or something like that!)
Anyway, aside from the conference, I'll have two days "off" that I can use to visit LA. I already asked around on Circvs Maximvs, and if everything works out, I might even meet a few, which would be cool. I wonder if there are also any EN Worlders in L.A. that might want to meet me.
(If my schedule on the PDC is unclear, it's worse for the two free days. I have some theoretical options I could go for, but nothing definite, nothing researched...)
Thanks to my newly acquired mobile phone, I should be able to keep myself up to date on the web even when in LA, and the hotel is supposed to have free wireless access, too.

So, this Sunday morning the voyage begins...
SNIP!

I'm 30min - 2 hours south of LA (depending on time and location of your conference). Yeah.... traffic is that bad.
Send me a PM or poke me in the HIVE and we'll see if we can meet up.

Thanks, I've never had any better crappy wireless service!
Don't mention it, you see, many American utilities companies function on the principle that it's best not to fork over money to upgrade until they could do it cheaply and until there is demand (Ie if you live in the countryside and want DSL your screwed unless some developer starts building tract housing nearby). That of course is part of the reason why my family switched wireless carriers, since they said they were not planning to building any towers close to where we live (I live in a housing tract that is near state/oil conglomerate owned wetlands which will never be developed.).

What kind of lazy capitalist do you have in the US? If there is no demand, create it!
I think this is a little like storage room at home - if you expand it somehow, you will see it being filled, even if everything seemed to work fine before and you didn't actually know how to use it!
So, what's your super secret tip on what I should absolutely do in my 2 free days in LA?

Lets see... There is Knotts Scary Farm at the Knotts Berry Farm theme park in Bruena Park, Shipwreck at (the Haunted) Queen Mary in Long Beach, Frightfest at Six Flags Magic Mountain theme park in Vallencia, Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios and there is also Disneyland and Disneyland California Adventure.
Most of the theme parks tend to close early during the Halloween Season because their Halloween events run from 7pm to 1am/2am. Knotts Scary Farm and Fright Fest are both good but they get crowded. Ride quality wise, Six Flags is way better than Knotts. I haven't been the the Six Flags event in several years so I'm not sure how good their mazes, shows or "scare zones" are compared to Knotts. I also can't compare the Universal Studios event to them either since I've never gone their Halloween event and I haven't been to Universal in like 8+ years.
The Queen Mary is fun to go to but their Halloween event sucks. It's basically a huge party and massive lines to enter into lengthy mazes.
Disneyland and Disney's Californian Adventure sucks and are expensive.
If you're into going out to the clubs, Friday is the night to do. The cover price is going to be costly ($25+), but there will be a lot of scantily clad women in them (no matter what type of club you go to).

Sanctily clad women generally sound good, but I am not really the "club" guy.
I went to the Universal Studies Halloween party already (it's part of the PDC in fact). I must admit I am not that much into Halloween and the "scare" stuff. It's certainly funny, but not very cruicial to me. I was in fact surprised that the park wasn't all that big...
I am not sure if I want to go to any other parks. Maybe some rides should be interesting...
I've heard repeatedly the suggestion to go to one of the beaches (St. Monica and Balbao were particularly mentioned), so I might try some of that. (Unfortunately, I don't have much "beach appropriate" clothing with me, but it should be fine for a long walk at the beach. )
Decisions decisions... I am not good at this "vacation" stuff.

The water is rarely warm enough to do much swimming in the Pacific off of SoCal anyway; don't worry about it.
Yeah, both of those beaches are pretty good (they both have boardwalks so there is more to do then just go to the beach).
If you're a museum type of person there's the Getty Museum and LACMA. LACMA's collection is larger but the Getty is free (although parking costs $10). The Getty seems small compared to LACMA and except for the rotating exhibits, the Getty's collection is pretty much all European art.

The root of intolerance against RPG players by some Christians is ignorance. The root of intolerance against Christians by some RPG players is ignorance. It's part of being human, but it's still good practice to not fall into the same behaviour one condemns.

Can't go wrong with that advance. In fact, I think they once did a study about the affect that puppies have on scantily clad women at Californian beaches.
