So what's your favourite beer? (Forked Thread)

Forked from: How Many Beers per Gaming Session?

Figured I should fork this from the above thread since it's getting kinda off-topic.

I like to travel when I can. I like to have good beer at the places I stop. If I were to turn up in your part of the world, what would you recommend to drink? Feel free to wax lyrical about your favourite tipple. Heck, you even discuss non-beery drinks if your really want to.

cheers all!

I don't drink beer. It is nasty stuff.

But, on rare occasion when I have a drink of something it would be E&J Brandy.

I was drinking La Chouffe with some friends before a movie this afternoon, so say it's my favorite beer for today. It's fancy and it packs a wallop --much like yours truly.

When I hit the hard liquor I prefer a single malt scotch but I should give brandy another try, it's been years since I had any.

La Chouffe. Sounds exotic. Where would I find that?

I feel very lucky to live in Melbourne, we have lots of pubs and bars with a massive array of beers. My favourite beer on tap at the moment is Kirin (don't like it bottled for some reason) or possibly one of the James Squire beers (the bar at uni has them)

Personally, I like to try as many different beers as I can. Lately I have been getting into some Trappist beers, all of which are brilliant.

I also had a Aventinus Weizen Eisbock the other day, that was something special.

For the general gaming group however, I tend to go for something drinkable but cheap. We were drinking Coopers green for a while but since we had a really dodgy slab, I mostly get Carlton Draught or some ALDI beer that is surprisingly good.

Bees Knees is the beer I use to introduce people. they tend to like the sweetness of the honey (it's not very malty either).

Recently I was in Belgium and discovered Delerium Tremens ( the other deleriums are not as good). I am very glad I can get it here.

Oh, and if you are in Victoria, look out for the Holgate Brewhouse they sell stuff from bottleshops but go to the brewhouse itsself for some really fresh, nice, kegged beer.

Good man. Ever have Lagavulin?

It can't be too exotic, you can get it all over Philadelphia, including the package goods store around the corner from my apartment. La Chouffe is a strong Belgian pale ale, so any place that has Belgian beers would be a good place to start.

La Chouffe can be found in Melbourne at Beer DeLuxe (in fed square) or at the Euro Beer Cafe. I might have seen it at the Belgium in St. Kinda Rd but I wont swear on it. I am not sure if Dan Murpheys carries it. A good beer though!

For everyday quaffing I stick with my local tui...but I'll try anything. I really enjoy anything from stout to lager (although I don't like pilsener..that knocks a whole lot of euro and yank beers out)...had a great month in Belgium for example trying the extensive list of beers there!

Beer, domestic: I like many of the brews from Samuel Adams. I prefer them dark and strong. While I don't particularly care for the odd varieties, I am partial to one at winter time. It's called Cranberry Lambic.

Beer, foreign: Guinness Stout, draft with the widget in the bottle or can. Yummy! The widgets are crunchy and good with ketchup.

Single malt: Lagavulin.

I'm not much for beer, but Woodpecker Cider is awesome and refreshing, as is Strongbow.

Up until about 3 or 4 years ago I couldn't stand beer. Actually I couldn't stand any form of alcohol. I have a very sensitive sense of smell and taste but for some reason 90% of all alcohol just tastes like medicene to me.

That changed when, in an attempt to not look like a ninny among my bar going friends, I started trying a different brand of beer every time I went out. Over time I actually became fairly knowledgable about the different brands, microbrews and styles and discovered why I disliked beer so much for so many years. I had mostly experienced beer from my Dad or friends from college. What they all shared in common was a tendencey to drink really cheap, really crappy beer.

Now years later I am pleasantly surprised to find that I actually really like beer as long as its darker, richer and more malty then hoppy. My favorites are bocks, porters and Scotch Ale. If you've never tasted Scotch Ale, real Scotch Ale, do so. It turns out I have a very high tolerance and can down 7 or 8 Smithwicks (a definite favorite) without much more then a mild buzz. The only drawback (to some, I don't find it to be so however) is I can't get drunk. After a short buzzing period I get sleepy and if I have more then I'm likely to just full asleep. I've never been drunk and never had a hang over. Still can't get past the taste of hard liquor though. It's all NyQuil to me.

Just one more item to add to the list of things that prove my physiology is likely extraterrestrial.

Smithwicks is very nice indeed. The beer in the fridge most often is Shiner Bock because everyone who comes to my house at least likes it. It is just full bodied enough to drink on its own, but not overpowering to drink with a meal. It is just dark enough to appeal to beer snobs (which I consider a compliment) but its still a twist off, so you don't feel too snooty opening one.

If I'm in the mood for a more expensive treat, I'll pick up the Sam Adams Black Lager - its my new favorite for the past year.

If I am working, playing or cooking outside I like an ice cold Pabst (bottle or can). But you gotta drink it fast - the charm fades if it isn't COLD.

Yeah and I git completely trashed......I didn't take into account that most of the beers were in the 7-9% range rather than the 4-5% by volume in the UK/NZ!

i have several Belgian glasses 'cos each different brew has it's own glass shape....cooooool (and commercially clever!)

Edit: Whisky: Caol Isla mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm peaty!

Now, I haven't been a real drinker since I was diagnosed with diabetes, but I do occasionally have a brew or two. My personal favorites are Anchor Steam, Guinness and Newcastle, for the hard stuff I generally partake from the bottle that states "Give every man his Dew", Tullamore Dew.

Depends on whats on tap. I'm not much of a beer drinker myself. Otherwise I enjoy Red Dog, Miller (High Life) & Guiness. Ocasionally I'll drink Bud, but only if there is nothing else available.

I'm more of a malt liqour person myself. Smirnoff Ice is my ambrosia.

It usually depends on my mood, but I tend to gravitate towards APAs and IPAs.

Careful youre not becoming diabetic as your drinking style is similiar to mine ever since my body rebeled on me.

Never much of a beer drinker. When I do its cheap stuff (Coors Light) where two beers and I'm buzzing and then ready to chill and doze.

I need to find out about Scotch. I've been told there is no sugar in but I don't understand how that is.

I lurve beer.

Our gaming group consumes massive, unbelievable amounts of mostly cheap swill- Pabst Blue Ribbon. Hell, I even dressed up as Sir Pabst of the Blue Ribbon for Halloween one year.

However, for actual preference, I think my current bent is towards Belgian white ales, and other beers of similar style. That explains my love of the New Belgium line- they try to capture that style, and they actually do a pretty good job of it.

If you want to know an absolute favorite beer, though, I'd have a hard time choosing, but Blackened Voodoo is near the top of my list. So is Fin du Monde, and so is Chimay.
