A Question for the Ages: Wars or Trek?

Both are awesome in their own way, depending on your personal taste. And sure, there are lots of other sci-fi franchises out there that are just as good, if not better, than these two. But Star Wars and Star Trek are hands-down the most successful of them all, and are widely considered the standard by which all others are measured.

So my question is:

If you had to choose a favorite, would it be Star Wars, or Star Trek?

Myself, I am going with Star Trek. I like 'em both, honestly, but I grew up watching Trek. It has more nostalgic value.

I can't choose one over the other. I like both equally; where's the poll option for that?

I'm not wishy washy. I have just about as many Star Trek novels as I have of Star Wars novels.

Much love for both series here, but Darth Vader edges it for the Wars.

Once upon a time my call would have been Star Wars, but after the prequel debacle, I've moved over to Trek.

Trek. It's Spock who won me over to this side...

I watched Kirk, Spock, & Co. in their first run when I was a little kid ... just like I watched all the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo launches. I was an utter Kennedy Space Kid and, in many ways, Star Trek fulfilled that vision -- hope, pushing beyond current limits, teamwork, and boundless wonder.

Now I also saw Star Wars when it first came out, back when it was just Star Wars, not "Episode IV". Wow, here was a pure hero film, something like a throwback to the old Errol Flynn style. It was fun, happy, and purely heroic.

Ultimately, though, I'll go with my childhood. Star Wars was fun (well, the first about 2 1/2 films ... the later "earlier" ones were terrible and I disliked the teddy bears) and Star Trek may be inconsistent across multiple series and films ... but I'll take the hope and group attitude of Star Trek over individual heroism of Star Wars.

But if I could watch a A New Hope/The Undiscovered Country double feature on the big screen ... I am down with it!

Well, apparently you like both, so you can't decide between them. Some polls are about hard choices.

What you don't know is that this poll will later be evaluated by an international media committee to see which franchise can be shelved indefinitely with the least social and commercial impact. (They really can't afford to keep both.)
There is no risk to lose a customer if he likes both equally, so his vote doesn't matter.

By the way, I didn't tell you this.

---

Startrek, by the way. Maybe narrow, but I just watched and read so much more Startrek than Star Wars, and overall, Startrek provides me with the more interesting themes and characters.

Had to vote for Trek, but it was tough! I think the deciding factor is that the wife and I watch our TNG DVDs on a regular basis, essentially just rotating through the entire series (a few times so far).

Before the new movies, the answer was Star Wars.

And I didn't hate the new movies. I just didn't like them as much as I wanted to, and they kind of took some of the magic away from the originals.

So, now it's switched to Trek, which never changed in my view from being a solidly good universe, including Enterprise and Voyager.

Star Wars or Star Trek?

Hmmm, tough question. But, since I have to choose, I'll choose ...

Love 'em both, but I had to go with Trek. Something about the trinity of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy just really resonated with me growing up. And still does, really. So, live long and prosper, I say.

This was a no-brainer until George Lucas pooped on my childhood.

Without KotOR and SWSE, Trek would have been a no-brainer. Those brough it back to even, and the latest movie gives a slight edge to Trek. Wars is better for gaming, though.

Too true, but at least it was only CGI poop.

Star Wars

I always felt the Star Wars plots affected the universe and had long term effects. It mattered whom won and how they won.

Star Trek

Exploration sounds good but if seemed to never effect anything (especially the TV series) so lacked the importance Star Wars had. ST:NG kind a bit past that but not like Styar Wars did.
