As the rats began to move forward, Sayida took a last glance back the way they had come, making sure no sneak attacks were likely from that quarter. Unfortunately, that glance delayed her reaction to the true threat.

As the rats surged forward, Sayida began to move as well. She stepped nimbly past her compatriots, taking a position at the leading edge of the party. While her staff was ready in her hands, she carried more as a defensive tool- when she struck, it was with the heel of one booted foot, aimed for the closest approaching rat... Unfortunately as she set up, her other foot skidded in some of the unnameable garbage on the cave floor, and she barely managed to avoid a painful fall.
OOC: Move (up to 30 feet, but really just far enough to be at the front line of the group and in range of the first closing rat; attack with unarmed strike/weapon finesse; 1d20+3 attack for 1d6 damage; AC 16, HP 9 defensively.
Attack 1d20+3= 4- a natural 1 (I hope that isn't an omen- but it is Friday the 13th...); roll Roll Lookup
Syut nocks and fires an arrow into the seething brown mass, skewering a rat. "It's a shame to waste arrows, but those things might be diseased."
OOC: 11 rats remaining.
NPCing Syut until his player returns, as requested.

Dzax flings his flail from under his shield and slaps it at one rat. "These are a nuisance more than a threat. Keep your eyes open for anything that might come from down there." He nods towards where the cave leads.
Syut and Grimm fire arrows, while the other party members attempt to squash rats in melee. Syut, Dzax, and Teal all strike true, each downing one rat.
The rats come on in a brown-furred wave, more motivated by fear than by hostile intent. Quite a few rush past the party, concerned only with escaping whatever lies at the back of the cave. Others, sensing the danger posed by those weapons, move to attack the adventurers. Dzax and Saiyda manage to crush two more as the rats attempt to close the distance and bite them.
Teal is bitten, but his skin at contact glows faintly for the briefest of moments - perhaps a trick of the light - and the rat's tooth breaks off, leaving him perfectly unharmed. The remaining rats flee rather than face the lethal weapons of the party.
In only a matter of seconds, the party finds themselves standing amidst dead rats in an abandoned cave.
OOC: First combat, finished. XP: 90 each.

The party's search turns up a tarnished silver holy symbol and a small red gem of some sort. Assorted silver and copper coins seem to be scattered about the lair, no doubt secreted there by the rats. There is also a broken metal point of some sort, separate from the arrows that the party fired. It perhaps came from an arrow or spear.
Before there is time to properly count and assess the coins, the party hears a faint whispering sound, like a distant exhalation. The scraping sound is heard again, much closer. To your horror, figures round the corner, stepping out of the gloom at the back of the cave. They stride towards you with deliberate, exaggerated slowness.
OOC: Roll Initiative!

Sayida stared at the approaching figures with disgust. The living dead were one of the terrors which were often laid at the feet of wizards- necromancy was one of the excuses that the persecutors used to incite people against the arcane arts. For all of that, Sayida had only heard of them- she had never seen them until now...
Four decaying bodies become distinct as they shamble closer. It becomes apparent that these were not originally human, though they are bipedal. They are too small and their heads are oddly shaped.
Dzax recalls the identifying features of different types of undead from his priestly studies. These shambling corpses exhibit characteristic decay, shuffling gait, and thickening of the skin. They are zombies, and the same magic that animates them renders them resistant to physical damage that is not done with slashing weapons.
OOC Giving you a bit more information now, so you have time to digest it. Also gave Dzax his Know (religion) info.

Syut curses and moves to stand a hair behind Dzax 'we in trouble, right? a Kama will help a bit here' 'I hope you got some big weapon on you man...'
ooc: Syut will attack as soon one of the zombs get in range and on his turn. he will try to stand his ground and attack standing next to Dzax. Attack (1d20+3=17) making dmg (1d6+3=7)

Sayida set herself into a ready stance, her quarterstaff ready for attack or defense- her stumble against the rats made her wary of charging headlong into a fight in this rough-floored cavern...
OOC: Ready action to attack the first zombie that comes into range. If someone mentions the whole DR/slashing issue, she will instead use her staff to push a zombie's arm out of the way to create an opening for one of the other PCs (ie. use Aid Another to hopefully boost the attack chances for someone with a slashing weapon).
