I really don't know at this point. I'll have to read about that tonight and decide. I wasn't even aware that there was a choice there! For the present situation, I can tell you that you don't sense anything, because there is nothing there to sense!
"Ambush point?" Having no need to eat Basher7 walks a circuit of the impromptu camp looking for any signs of trouble. "Perhaps this large rock formation at our flank would serve as an ideal vantage point?"
Basher7 sees no signs of anything to be concerned about, but he figures he might as well make the complete circuit of the rock. It's not easy to get atop the rock. Think of the boulder beside hwy 63 near Imboden, make the rock about 3 times that big, and you'll have a pretty good idea of what I mean.
"Ok. It seems they are even to stupid to use a good ambush point. Look at it, it's a good position to the road. Maybe we should use it..."
Tarrk says to the others.

"I know that I am anxious to get to this...Winterhaven and find out more about the growing darkness than wait here any longer. If everyone has recovered their strength, maybe we should keep moving?" Khellek suggests as he begins packing his bags and finishes the last bite of his snack.
"Ayh, you are right. Let's move on. Blood and Glory awaits!"
Tarrk says assumes his position at the front of the group..

Ok, will be back on monday. If there is a fight before my return, use the racial power in the first turn, then recuperating, then howling (as long as the THP last), then restart with recuperating
And Leif, don't use up my rage

Elerosse and the others begin to rise, following Khellek's suggestion, and everyone gathers the gear that they had laid to the side for the momentary rest. Basher7, as usual, had remained standing and fully geared-up like.....well, like a Magical Construct of some sort.....while the others lounged about.
Passive Perception checks, everyone! (Not 'spot' anymore, isn't that right?)

Hi I'm a comic and rpg nerd. Don't hurt me, please.
Khellek will continue to watch their backs as the quintet continues on their journey to Winterhaven. "Well, this has certainly been an uneventful trip. Maybe the tales of the trouble in this town are nothing more than the tales of bards, you know how they tend to exaggerate things, right?" The shifter says, taking a friendly jab at his companion.
Aimhirghin puts on a mock serious face and a stuffy academic voice. "Humph. Poetic license, the 'Artful Lie,' has long been our prerogative, my friend." Slipping back into his regular voice he adds, "Still, best to proceed with some caution. One never knows . . ."
So to make sure I understand the skills in 4e, passive perception is just a take 10 plus your Perception skill modifiers. Elerosse is untrained in Perception, so he's just +2 for WIS. Right? The active check is then 1d20+2.
Basher7 and Tarrk are the fist to put up their hands motioning for silence, and then you all hear it: There is singing coming from the road! Elerosse (and anyone else who speaks Draconic) understands the speech: it is a traveling song about a serpent taking revenge for her stolen eggs. (Very gory and disturbing.) The voices are not too close. You would guess that you have some time to prepare, if you get to it straightaway and do not dilly-dally.
Learning to trust the instincts of a creature created for war, Khellek will follow Basher's lead and attempt to climb up a tree, or if he can't, hide behind it.
