Let's homebrew together!

1st post:

"From far away the world ob Marok seems to be shrouded in gray mists."

The rules for our collective homebrewing:

- Everyone who posts in this thread contributes to our homebrewed world.
- Every post (contribution) counts as a part of the world and is accepted by everyone. Please try not to add elements that are too silly. Although if you do, we have to accept it as a part of the world of Marok.
- Every contribution should try to "zoom in" a little from the last post. In the end, we may end at a dale, a town, a house, a person, whatever.
- Describe as detailed or as open-ended as you want. Use quotation marks as I did.
- Everyone can only post (and thus contribute) once.
- Stay rules neutral.

"In the central ocean of the world is a massive volcano that constantly spews magically-tainted gray ash (thus partially accounting for the gray mist) and is filled with lava as black as night. Surrounding the volcano are several large continents..."

"In the ocean surrounding the volcano are dozens of intelligent semi-aquatic races that have been at war with each other since the dawn of the world. They fight for glory and for the right to challenge the landbound followers of Raishea for the secrets of the spark of divinity, which she guards from mortals.

She has special clerical followers known as the Guardians of the Divine."

"Centuries ago a clan of dwarves named the Etheel clan committed a terrible crime. The nature of this crime is kept secret by their High Elders, entrusted only to a select few who pass the knowledge down to their replacements.

They were cursed by Kalshaken, the dwarvish god of the Earth, with an almighty geas upon themselves and their descendants to never set foot upon solid ground again. They built the floating city of Borask that sails the oceans nearest the great volcano, harvesting the grey ash. They mix these ashes with plant resin from their floating gardens to make a light yet hard ceramic substance, from which they make everything in the city.

The artifact-foundries at the heart of the city though do more than make their tools. The High Elders are a secret cabal of Ur-priests and spellthieves mystics, who rob the divine spark from the ashes of Raishea hoping to turn it against Kalshaken's geas.

They have achieved a limited success and several dwarves have been freed from the curse. Under the cover of the heaviest ash-storms, they go to concealed docks and sail away for the continents in their Apparatuses of Kwalish underwater craft, recovered from a lost underwater civilization. These dwarves act as secret agents of the High Elders upon the land. The High Elders know that each clan was entrusted with one of the secrets of Kalshaken's divine nature and drive these agents to infiltrate the churches and uncover each secret.

Borask is sometimes lashed with mighty storms of the ash that they sail through, scouring the city like a sandstorm. During this time the dwarves take shelter deep within the city in mighty shelters of stone. Each year though the storms grow worse, now only the strongest buildings are safe and anyone left out upon the streets can be flayed down to the bone by these winds.

A few non-dwarves have come to live on Borask and every so often dwarves from other clans who find themselves unable to follow the strictures of Kalshaken choose to liven on Borask, following their brothers into exile. They do not share in Kalshaken's curse though and there is ethnic strife within the city between the cursed dwarves of the Etheel clan and those who have come to the city more recently."

(Now system neutral)

One of the continents surrounding the great volcano lies to the south, out of the main path of the volcanic ash. This continent is known as Veridia, the green lands. However, just because the skies here are relatively clear of ash, does not mean it is mist-free. Amidst the great jungles, wide plains and rolling hills of this continent are long, vast cracks that open deep in the earth. These cracks are apparently nearly bottomless, and spew out great clouds of steaming mist, choking vapors (at irregular intervals) and even great spouts of water, some boiling hot, some icy cold.

On this continent many humans, humanoids, and other creatures live. For generations past they, too, have fought in the wars for Raishea's sparks of divinity; their empires and kingdoms have risen and fallen, based on the successes or failures they have made.

The most powerful knightly order in Veridia are the Knights Poverty.
Also known as the Shunners, the Knights are known far and wide as
opponents of oppressive or over zealious religions and protecters of the poor.Without a central governing body the Knights have split into many factions and some chapters have become quite currupt. But the pure spirit of these Knights also shines through in many regions. The more northernly chapters tend to be the purest.
The Knights in thier purest form Shun religion and Possetion save for a
single weopon that they able to imbue w/ mystical ability
The currupt Knights practice Dark rituals and are very selective about
wwhat religion they protect against.
In one of the smaller northern chapters has come a powerful Knight named Kalin Third-Eye,so named for his extra eye that if looked into can purfy the vilest of the Knights. He posseses the power to unite the chapters and bring them back to purity.

Kalin Third-Eye has already purified a small number of chapters, uniting them under their original cause, however, the soouthernmost chapters despise Kalin and wish to destroy him

"Legends claim that the world was once nothing but ocean, and the sea-dwelling peoples were the kings and rulers of all that was. They worshiped lost, submarine gods known as the Circle of Klaset. The priests of Klaset knew of Raishea even then, and kept her captive at the sea floor, drawing her divine ash up through deep ocean vents and harnessing as much of its power as was possible.

"Raishea was a slave to the people of the sea, and she wallowed in her shackled for millennia. But she longed to be free, and used her power to trick several of the ancient sea people, offering them great gains if they were to help her to freedom. Several became her followers, and worked long as a secret cult to do her binding, and free her from the watery depths.

"Centuries past before her plan could come to pass, and as her followers finally worked to spread chaos through the sea kingdoms and their rulers, she broke free of her chains and what had once been small vents from which only a portion of her power could be drained turned to massive volcanoes that spewed forth her fury and wrath.

"With the flames of the earth at her side, and the righteous power of her hatred guiding her, she stormed through the sea to the surface, forging numerous volcanoes and spreading a great flood of lava across the world. It was in this way that she formed the world of land, and set forth the creation of all that currently exists."

Overhead, large and heavily armed skyships armed with magically enhanced cannon float through the grey mists, navigating by the skill of their pilots who routinely sail high to get bearings in the mist. Cloud Riders often face many terrors, such as hungry fliers or pirates who lie hidden in the cloudbanks for fat prizes to pass.

The ships bring necessary trade between large settlements which often have large floating sky-docks for the ships. The ships sail using the steady currents called the 'Trade-Winds' to the different continents, and use smaller air-flows for smaller trade areas.

Due to the magical nature of the ash clouds, earth that has been thrown into the sky due to a past cataclysm maintains its position, giving rise to many small villages, hermits, ancient towers, bandit dens or pirate havens to which people who wish to escape the laws of the 'Landbound'. Some areas are quite large, and the ease of which small air-boats can be made means travel between nearby cloud-villages is fairly easy.

The local villages often net the mainly harmless creatures that float in schools through the clouds, or hunt some of the larger creatures.

Smaller groups of adventurers can often be Cloud Riders, who seek to find ancient artifacts or lucrative trade areas between the land bound or the different settlements in the skies above. Such adventurers are often called 'Ashies' due to their grey coloring for too many hours spent fruitlessly sifting through the ash clouds for ancient treasures. Many small groups form for protection of the local villages and criminal groups flourish in the environment.

'Stormies' are also known as 'Storm Riders', a powerful group of mages who focus on cloud and weather manipulation who wield great influence in the clouds for their own ends.
