You've ridden from the Big Muddy to La Ciudad de los Angeles. You've robbed banks, trains, and even the payroll caravan for the 12th Cavalry. Killed more than one man, hell, probably killed more than a hundred, but you ain't never shot someone that didn't have it coming. Least, not on purpose.
But the old ways are dying. Civilizations pushing in from both coasts, and 'fore too long there won't be a place for such as you in these American states. So when Sam Garret, the leader of your little band of outlaws suggested one last big score and then a well-deserved retirement south of the border, you figured it was a good idea.
You don't know who sold you out, but the federales were waiting for you, a black-coated Pinkerton at the lead, and the job went to hell faster'n a preacher-man at a whorehouse. You left half your number dead or dying, the dirt streets turning to red mud as their blood ran out. You can still hear them curse you as you charged out of town, crouched low over your horse as bullets whined past.
Now you and the survivors are on the run. Little money, less ammo, and a posse hot on your tail. Mexico's still the best bet, and ol' Sam always had a backup plan. A little mining town in the mountains, and a pile of gold waiting for a Mexican army escort that's too busy terrorizing the campesinos to come get it.
You're luck's bound to change sometime. Right?
Probably use Grim Tales, but I just got Sidewinder from Paizo during the $2 sale, so I may use that instead. Pregens will be provided.
Named for their almost supernatural ability to disappear into thin air after a job, the Ghost Riders have operated in the Western Territories since the end of the Civil War ten years ago. Successful more often than not, the gang has acquired a reputation as ruthless yet professional. Though they have taken hostages and beaten the occasional uncooperative bank teller, they have generally avoided inflicting civilian casualties. However, several times they have been involved in bloody shootouts with the Army, local law enforcement, and Pinkerton agents, resulting in deaths on both sides and incidental casualties among locals caught in the crossfire. Members of the gang have come and gone – some retired, some retired permanently – but the core has remained intact under the leadership of Sam Garret. Known to be absolutely single-minded when it comes to the job, he has ruled the gang with an iron fist. It is thought that he is the reason the gang doesn’t run rampant when it attacks a town. There has been a $10,000 bounty on his head for nearly a decade, and no one has gotten close to claiming it.
The Survivors
Joe Dupree: A relative newcomer to the gang, Dupree is the the self-proclaimed ‘Louisiana Kid’. Although not yet 20, he has already earned a reputation as a hot-head, but his blinding speed has kept him alive so far.
Falls From Horses: A Comanche Indian, Falls From Horses earned his name when he let himself be thrown from the saddle during his first raid. He has little love for the beasts, preferring to move on foot whenever possible. He has a special hatred for the army, and has killed a number of soldiers, often sneaking into camps in the middle of the night and escaping unseen.
Diego Calderon: A rogue and womanizer from south of the border, Diego has lived a charmed life. A gambler by nature and profession, he lives by his wits and his silver tongue. It is thought that Garret often sends Diego ahead of the gang to scout the towns they plan to hit.
Clyde Ballou – Known as ‘Mongrel’, Clyde is a mountain of a man, towering above his comrades and terrifying those hapless enough to stand in his shadow. He is usually used for crowd control – a couple swings of his ham-sized fists is enough to take the fight out of any bank guard. Fortunately, he is dumb as a brick. He has been with Garret since the beginning, and it is suspected that Sam feels some personal obligation to him.
Heironymous Lucas – Called ‘Luke’, Heironymous is the old-timer of the bunch. He was a decorated cavalryman during the War, but some personal tragedy led him to a life of crime. He is unnaturally calm in the face of chaos, the eye of the hurricane. By all accounts, Garret trusts Lucas more than other member of the gang, and often relies on his advice.
James McGee – Little is known of McGee other than the fact that he used to be a priest. How he came to ride with a bunch of outlaws is unknown. Eyewitnesses say that he often prays aloud during a robbery, and has even stopped to give last rites to dying lawmen. Since he was the one that shot them, that seems only fair.
Wow, this sounds great! I am really intrigued to know how this turns out. Alas I am already signed up for a game in this slot. If you end up going the sidewinder route let me know how it works out, I am interested in that ruleset.
