Best Castle?

Hi everybody;

I was really disappointed to hear that Map-A-Week over at Wizards.com is no longer going to be updated. In my opinion, that was a fantastic addition to my campaign resources, but every month I waited for them to do a great big monster of a castle, and sadly, it never came. My own campaign has quite a few castles, all exquisitely described, but unmapped. I've never actually mapped a whole castle complex before, and I was wondering:

What's the best castle you've ever used in game? This includes inhabited castles or ruins, but I'm really looking for above-ground structures, rather than sunken ones. Have you had a particularly good experience with a castle from a module?

With a castle from a module? Nope. However, I really like Castles & Keeps from Darkfuries. Personally I prefer the electronic version, because you can blow up the floor plans to use as battle mats if you are so inclined.

Hmm, I didn't know those were available for electronic download; they hadn't popped up at RPGNow, it appears they have their own e-store. Thanks BC!

Castle Ravenloft!

I remember using the included partial 3-D perspectives as building block for creating a full detail illustration of what the castle would look like from the exterior. Amazing!

Back in the day, Dragon had an issue with three very-close-real-world castles, which I used to great effect on a couple of occasions. There was also an issue with a cardboard cutout castle called Great Stoney which also had floorplans. If you go searching for castle sites on the web, you can find a remarkable number of floorplans for cool castles to use as guides.

My favorite castle is castle Raglan in SE Wales. Its was mostly rubble but around the grounds they had painting of what the castle would have looked like in Medieval times. Super cool. The castle in Ireland where they filmed Excaliber was also cool since it was well preserved; I forget the name.

Welsh Historic Monuments (CADW) has great little books that you can buy for about 3 pounds that have pictures, castle floorplans and history of the castle. The history varies since often much is not known. Caernarfon and Conwy are, of course, the biggest ones.

Here's one of the artist reconstructions. Remember, they are positioned such that the painting is of the view from where you stand. Neat!

Just wait a few more weeks for CastleWorks Ultimate to come out from WorldWorks Games, if you want a beatiful, completely modular 3-D cardboard castle. Touted to be "The most expansive castle creation system ever created!" The PDF version should be out this month, with a pre-printed version coming in October or so. You can already ogle some pre-production sketches and textures.

Meanwhile, you can still download their soon-to-be-surpassed CastleWorks Classic set for a mere $5. This one is already a couple of years old, and the WWG guys have only gotten better since. Here's picture of the *old* set, the new one should look even better:

(PS: no, I am not affiliated with WWG in any way, I just think they do incredible work!)
