I believe CotSQ came out well before Level Adjustments were nailed down, which is why our gear levels don't match their levels.

Again, as Garnfellow pointed out in an earlier post, there are a few schools of thought as to wealth.

I believe (IMHO), that the authors of CotSQ may not have used the Drow Level Adjustment (+2) in calculating wealth levels. As you can see by Table 4-23 (pg. 127 of the DMG) that this current level of gear is consistant with a level 1 NPC.

Not sure (kindly point it out) if both PCs and/or NPCs get gear adjustments based on Level Adjustments (so far, all I have read it that it is for PCs (not NPCs) but the texts are poorly worded).

The SRD file on Improving Monsters has this line, which is what I took to heart:

If you choose to equip a monster with gear, use its ECL as its character level for purposes of determining how much equipment it can purchase. Generally, only monsters with an Advancement entry of “By character class” receive NPC gear; other creatures adding character levels should be treated as monsters of the appropriate CR and assigned treasure, not equipment.

I'm not sure if this passage was pulled from the 3.5 MM or the 3.5 DMG DMG, and I think those books contradict each other on the finer points of monstrous treasure/gear.

Certainly if you use the +2 LA when calculating gear, you get closer to the equipment carried by the drow in D1-2-3.

Typical Female Fighter Progression

The following feat selections varies slightly from what I proposed above for generic female fighters. I decided to de-emphasize the specialty in two-weapon fighting for this generic build in favor of feats that improved mobility and quick attacks.

At the end I give some suggestions for swapping feats to create two-weapon fighter and drow archer builds.

The drow presented here had the following ability scores before racial adjustments: Str 10, Dex 15, Con 14, Int 8, Wis 13, Cha 12.

Thoughts on converting drow clerics (and not to goodness and light)

As I get ready to do up a generic female drow cleric progression, it’s clear that there are a few wrinkles to be addressed that didn’t come up when working on the other classes. The cleric class has undergone some pretty dramatic changes between 1st edition, 2nd edition, and 3e.

The clerics of the original D1-2-3 were just like any other evil clerics in 1st edition AD&D. There were no specialty priests; all clerics used the same spell list and wielded maces.

Second edition had specialty priests of Lolth with some interesting specialty powers: immunity to spider venom, a dominate person spell-like ability, detect lies, ability to transform into a spider, etc.

We also saw a growing divergence between how the Forgotten Realms and other settings handle drow, Lolth, and her priesthood. Monster Mythology and Drow of the Underdark both feature similar but different versions of Lolth and her specialty priests.

Fast forward to 3e. I understand that the Forgotten Realms version of Lolth has her domains as Darkness, Drow, and Spiders; her favored weapon is a dagger. The generic D&D version of Lolth from Deities and Demigods has her domains as Chaos, Destruction, Evil, and Trickery; her favorite weapon is a whip.

Now, I hate a great many of the things done to the drow in the Forgotten Realms setting (c.f. Do'Urden, Drizzt). But there have also been some very good things done there that could be plundered for our conversion. Drow of the Underdark, if you can get past the awkward Elminister framing device, is a dang good book.

So, when converting clerics of D1-2-3 I want to keep close to the feel of the original modules while using 3e rules, and if possible I would just as soon add in newer elements from 2nd edition and 3e if it improves the overall work. The key is to have new stuff that does not contradict anything in the original.

There were no clerical domains in 1st edition, so we have a lot of freedom in choosing Lolth’s domains for the conversion. All of the domains in Deities and Demigods and Forgotten Realms make sense, and I suppose one could use all seven of them, though that seems a bit much. The Drow and Spider domains look like this:

I really like the Spider domain, and I sort-of-like the Drow domain, though I have no idea what that cloak of dark power spell does.

I am not a big fan of Lolth having Destruction or Trickery as her domain: they work, but both feel like a bit of a stretch. If you chuck those two out, that leaves us with Chaos, Darkness, Drow, Evil, and Spiders. If I had to drop one of those, it would probably be Chaos: I think of Lolth as more evil than chaotic, and the drow are neutral evil in 3e (even if I’m converting the Vault drow as CE). So the domains that leaves me with are Darkness, Drow, Evil, and Spiders. I’d love to hear other opinions.

The favored weapon of Lolth is a tougher question: dagger or whip? Many drow clerics in D1-2-3 have daggers as a back-up weapon along with their mace, and since a dagger is a simple weapon you don’t have to burn a feat in order to be proficient with it. Daggers also fit the back-stabbing, biting nature of Lolth.

Whips as a favored weapon for Lolth’s clerics is, I think, new to 3e. (Though I can remember a weird snake-headed whip magical item that was used by high priestesses in 2nd edition.) So it doesn’t have a lot of game history. A whip’s an exotic weapon, so a single-classed drow cleric would have to be 2nd level before she could take Exotic Weapon Proficiency and even use the darn thing. So there’s that. But the nifty entangling ability of a whip does nicely mimic Lolth’s webs, so there is a certain coolness factor to having a whip.

But on balance, having dagger as the favored weapon of Lolth probably makes for less hassles and is closest to the original text. But I can be persuaded otherwise . . .

Daggers, definitely. Whips make no sense, in my opinion. How does one wield a whip in the confined space of the Underdark? I'm not up on my 3e rules, but how can a whip harm an armored foe, anyway?

I think that's settled, then. All singled classed clerics will use daggers as Lolth's favored weapon.

Late last night it did occur to me that there are lots of female fighter/clerics in D1-2-3, and with the extra fighter feats a whip proficiency wouldn't be such a hardship. One could imagine a couple of different clerical orders of Lolth, one focusing on the dagger, the other on the whip. I'll probably shelve this idea until we start tearing into the conversions.

Conversion Status

I’ll be busy over the next week prepping for games on Monday and Friday, so I probably won’t get much done on the conversion in that time. I need to finish the typical female drow cleric progression and then I can tackle the Kuo-Toans. While it’s an initial pain to do these generic progressions, once done the actual conversions go very quickly.

I’ve already begun to convert some encounter areas, and so far it looks like most of the encounters leading up to the Shrine of the Kuo-Toa range from around EL 10 to EL 13, which is in the zone. My copy of the Tome of Horrors is getting a good workout, providing stats on lurkers above, giant slugs, and trappers.

Looking ahead, the single biggest problem in converting all of D1-2-3 is probably resolving what the heck to do with the lich Asberdies in the troglodyte warrens. A 3e lich 20th-level wizard is epic territory: CR 24, so far beyond the capabilities of the PCs as to be ridiculous. The question to be answered is, what is the purpose of this encounter? The old school modules occasionally featured super-powerful monsters that Players Were Not Meant to F$#@% With. I think their sole purpose was to screw foolhardy players. Ever had a PC become lunch to the owlbear from B2, The Keep on the Borderlands?

If this is the purpose of the lich encounter, then you could just convert him over, level for level, and say a prayer for your players. Personally, I wouldn’t bother: I’d either ignore the lich altogether or treat him like I do godlike beings: no stats needed. Basically, whatever they want to do, they do.

But, on the other hand, high level wizards and liches had far fewer hit points and resources in 1st edition. Was Asberdies intended to be a very, very tough encounter that could, with much luck and intelligent play, be defeated? In which case one might convert him as, say, a lich 13th-level wizard, which would be a CR 17 encounter. Still extremely deadly, but at least possible. It’s something to think about.
