[OT] Miniature Storage Question

Andrew D. Gable

First Post
OK, here's the deal. I'm going through my room attempting to make more space, and right now my painted miniatures are taking up an entire shelf. With more on the way ;), I need to find an alternate place to put the ones I have. I'd use a shoebox, but I'm concerned that some of the multipieced ones (like the Reaper dragons, winged demons, etc) could come apart.

What's everyone suggest? What do you all do w/ yours?

Well, from playing various mini games (GW, Clan War, etc.), I use a Plano tackle box, the kind with removable trays. They are adjustable so that you can fit a lot of different minis in them, and there is a large space in the top that can fit the bigger ones.

I've also got a GW case and another one built to transport full armies, but that would probably be a bit over-kill. Check out the tackle boxes and/or tool boxes (if you magnatize the bases of the minis), and you should be able to get them packed away.

Hope this helps.

I decided to look in to the Plano tackle box systems out there, since that idea makes sense.

Here are some of the various bigger Plano Tackle Boxes, can anyone reccommend one?
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/hunting-fishing-inc/tackleshop.html .

Also, there are cheaper classic Stowaway 3701 series Plano's that are a mere $4.95 each, 6 for $27.00. at the site listed below. They measure 14"L x 9.13"W x 1.38" H and have adjustable compartment configurations for up to 34 clear compartments each. Those look pretty good, for the money. You can find them at
http://www.tackletogo.com/planstow371.html .

Also, they are slightly cheaper here at $4.59 each:

Additionally, Plano Stowaway Model 4700 holds up to 54 figures. It is a dual-action, two-tiered design with two separate storage areas, each with independent latches and access. It is made of clear, polypropylene for see-through convenience. It measures 14” x 9” and 2.75”. Dividers can be used to vary compartments from 13-54. The lower box of this model also serves as roomy bulk storage space or divided compartments. It's about $5.99 at various places, including this one:

Finally, you can buy some nice soft bags to hold stacks of the Plano Stowaway boxes. For example, the Plano 3365 Gear Bag
Holds up to four 3701 StowAways, and consists of Front and Side pockets, and Adjustable shoulder strap. It weigh's 5 lbs, and measures: 14"L x 10 1/4"W x 10"H. It sells for about $15.38, for example here:

Has anyone bought a full Plano system for their miniatures and tried it out?

I use an oversized pistol case. It costs about $50 and will hold about 60-70 figs on each level, there are two levels, but when it is closed you could throw the case around, drop it on the ground and don't have to worry about damaging the figs.

I just replaced my tackle boxes because I either had to put foam on the top and bottom of the fig, making it so you can't see the fig without unpacking each individual spot, or worry about the fig getting banged up when transporting them.

I bought the plain case. They also offer a case with custom foam for figs. I opted not to go with this one because figs very in size and I thought it would not be flexible enough. I bought thru this company. Excellent customer service. I had the stuff in my house in three business days from my order.

Packing Figures

I don't have that many figures, so I can't say I have a huge problem with it. I use my dad's "50th Anniversary Snap-On Wrench" case. It's real nice! Polished wood and all padded and foam on the inside. Course, i have no idea how available they are...

I have used tackle boxes, but in my experience they allow for too much rattling around and chipping of paint, etc.

The Games Workshop cases are indeed nice.

Like CamelToe, I've had the best luck with gun/pistol cases. The ones I prefer are a bit cheaper ($20-30) than the ones mentioned above, but have only one level and hold about half the figures. You just take a scalpel or exacto knife and cut out the appropriate shape for your minis, and they're safe and snug forevermore :).

I use Toolboxes with multi layers of foam with card board for strenght.

BTW Minis and how to store them are in no way "off topic" for D20 system discusion.

i willl edit in more details later!

Box lid
Extra foam for stability
Cardboard
1/ 4” Foam sheet [from Hancock Fabrics]
Minis {Small minis on 20MM bases & pennies, Dire Rats, Ratmen Gobbos, dogs
1/4” Foam sheet
Cardboard masking tape holds foam to cardboard
1/ 4” Foam sheet
Minis ( Medium (non fragile)Minis on 1 inch washers and slotta bases)
1/4” Foam sheet
Cardboard
1/ 4” Foam sheet
Minis (Big minis 40mm base & 1.5” washers, Reaper Ettin, Chainmail Owlbear, Ogres and Minotaurs)
1/4” Foam sheet
Cardboard
1/ 4” Foam sheet
Minis {Calvary;1”x2” bases Orcs on Dire wolves, Bretonian Knights on Horseback
1/4” Foam sheet
Cardboard
1/ 4” Foam sheet
Minis {cheap sturdy plastic minis from Heroquest.}
1/4” Foam sheet glued to bottom of box.

This works for most of my minis. For the very fragile [WOTC multipiece] I take THICK sheets of foam and custom cut a foam lining for them in a small box. I have most of my Naresh faction in the ranger / ravager combo box Chainmail mins
