Tiger Animal Companion & Animal Growth?

Using the alternative animal companion sidebar in the PH, a druid can take a tiger companion and then cast animal growth on it, correct?

I know animal companions can't have awaken cast on them, so is this the next best thing?

Correct, they can.

I'm not sure what you mean by "next best thing," however. One of the major benefits of awaken is the fact that the animal can begin taking class levels. That can't be done with animal growth.

Yes, Animal Growth has always been a popular method for druids to beef up their companions. Except for the brief period between the release of the PH 3.5 and the PH 3.5 errata, when it was illegal.
