Mightier than the Sword - IC: Chapter One

The fuzzy memories from the previous night’s theft flash through the minds of those who had just been knocked unconscious – the red fluorescent noose primary among them. As their eyes begin to focus, the individuals laying in the room see a young woman standing only a few feet into the doorway to the common sleeping room. The inn only had one room to use as a great bunkhouse, but it seemed secure enough last night. But now the occupants of the room find themselves robbed with a woman standing in front of them. She seems to be yelling something, and she sounds afraid.

“Raithen!” She yells once more. Her panicking and shrieking voice rings solidly through the room. “Raithen! Curses upon Fharlanghn and all who worship him! Fat lot of good its done us. It’s happened again! Third time in as many months at that!”

From somewhere else in the inn the slow clumping of boots slowly draw nearer to the woman and the inn's bunkroom. The footfalls upon the hardwood floorboards reveal that the person is either drunk or still nearly asleep. The voice belonging to the footfalls bellows out a response and indicates that the owner of the voice is not drunk, just wishing he was still asleep. “By the gods, Gwenny, don’t curse Fharlanghn! It’s bad for business. People won’t stay here if they hear you cursing the very god that protects them in their travels!” The stutter and the sighs in his voice brought on by his sleepy condition can plainly be heard.

The young woman looks back at the occupied bunks, a scared look in her eyes. Her green eyes then immediately dance around the room, quickly taking an inventory of what possessions of the inn had been stolen, if anything. Slowly, the eyes of those who had been knocked unconscious focus enough that it can be seen that she is wearing a set of black overalls and a loose fitting white barmaid’s shirt. Something sits at her feet … concentrating on the object reveals a small pail holding some kind of liquid. Upon further investigation, there seems to be a housecat standing with its front paws on the lip of the pail. Its head is leaning over the edge of the pail and the faint sound of lapping can be heard as the cat drinks out of the pail.

Looking around the room, the room appears to be the same from the night before when when the occupants each closed their eyes to sleep. The wooden bunks look undisturbed and none of the windows appear to be broken. The block windows aren’t on tracks cut into the wall or on hinges, so they cannot even be opened in the first place. It appears that the nighttime robbery was motivated purely by an attempt to steal your possessions – because as far as you can remember that is all that is missing from the room - and that looks as though to be the only thing disturbed in the room.

As Gwenny scans the room, those in the room can hear her muttering in a very stern tone, “Jithar will pay for this. Someday, somehow. His minions will steal from someone powerful enough to get him back. And I’ll be there watching as they pay him back.” A serious scowl pours over her face and her eyebrows wrinkle together as she makes yet another silent vow in her mind to get revenge on Jithar for ruining her business.

In all of this, she seems completely unaware that the party has even been awakened by her presence. The footfalls draw closer down the hall, but it will be several moments before the tired clumping of the feet can bring their owner to the young woman’s side. As Gwenny scans the room for damage, the happy lapping of an unchecked housecatcan be heard.

    Galen, Half-Drow Commonsword

Galen awoke to a sreaming racket from where he recalled the doorway was located. Awaking hard from the night before, he slowly arises it find his nape of his head throbbing, as he rubs it, images and memories flashback from the night before...

    Thats right...

Slowly getting out of the bed he was provided for the night, he notes that everything of his is good, save the clothing...

Pulling on his boots, You have got to be jesting, my bag, my weapons, my armor, but, my gloves? They took my gloves...

Looking around the room others see a man of average build, though not of looks. His skin is several shades darker then the average human, a grey-ashen color is tinted to him. His iris are the the color of his human parents, however, his pupils are of a crimson nature showing his drow heritage. Always a clean-shaven man, his head shaven as clean as his face. Besides his tone of skin, he is generally unremarkable in a crowd. He has on a pair of stout boots, his clothes seem to be of a durable cloth in neutral tones; a long sleeved shirt of greenish-brown and slightly baggy pants of a brown-tone. In his hands is a large brimmed hat...

"Lady, please calm yourself, my name as you may recall is Galen, where are my things," Pausing for a moment, "better, yet, who has my things and why..."

    Kitrina, Drakontos Noble

A strikingly beautiful woman slowly rises up in her bed. Her golden blond hair tied up, and a golden twinkle in her blue eyes as she peers her surroundings. Wearing only a sheer silk bedshrift, she pulls her legs up close to her chest and clutches them, her eyes darting arround more and more nervously.

Her eyes dart around quickly, and she gathers breath to scream, but she catches herself and lets out a huge sigh. "Wh..wh...who are you all.... h..h..how did I get h..here?" she asks nervously. "Where's Granger*?"

    Spoiler:
Granger is Kitrina's usuall bodyguard/escort and often drives carridges for her or rides besides her if she's traveling by horseback.

    Warrick Steel, Human Ranger

Warrick rubbed the side of his head . . . 'One dousy of a hangover . . . ,' he thought. He looked around in the common room, and continued his thoughts. 'Looks like I must have been gambling again as well. Ah well, not the first time this has . . . .'

"Wait a minute!" Warrick exclaimed rising unsteadily from his cot. "I distinctly remember being clubbed over the head right here . . . owww."

Warrick rubbed his hand against his blue black hair, brushing it to the side to touch tenderly at his bruise. Tanned from his time outdoors, Warrick inspected his callused hands, making certain he wasn't in another fist fight. He glanced around for his armor, weapon and supplies to no avail.

"Anyone get the name of noose boy?" he asked to no one in particular. He stood and inspected the room . . . looking for clues as to what happened.

    All in the room:

Gwenny seems startled at your moments and your speech. "Oh my, I'm sorry. I was just all caught up with the intrusion again. I shouldn't have woken you." Looking to Warrick she continues, "I'll have something in your breakfast to help with the throb, sir. It's the least I can do."

Turning to address Galen's question, and seeming charmed by his politeness in such a situation she adds, "Jithar's the name. He's the evil mage in town is behind all this."

"Now you don't know that for sure, Gwenny," shouts Raithen's voice from just outside the door. He turns the corner and fills the doorway. He is a large human, only 6'1" but clearly over 200 pounds - most of which is muscle. He looks to be in his mid-forties, but the fact that his body is so well kept up could be hiding an older age. His hair is cut as short as scissors will cut it. He also is wearing a black set of overalls at the moment, although he hasn't been awake long enough to have clipped the straps over his shoulders. As he talks, he is still sturggling to straighten the sleeveless thin white shirt he is using to cover his torso. He continues, "You assume Jithar is to blame, but you assume Jithar is to blame for everything bad that happens here, including the weather!"

Gwenny frowned at his suggestion, knowing that he was discrediting her.

He continued, answering Katrina's sincere question as well. "You, ma'am, were brought in by your man-at-arms protector late last night after the rest had arrived. He was desperately in need of a place to leave you off. He mumbled something about needing to place you safely for the night while creating a diversion with the carriage. He wouldn't tell me no more, though, he said it just wasn't safe enough. He did leave this letter, though. Said to give it to you when you awoke." Raithen extends a hand with the letter towards Katrina, but does not step further into the room. He is about 6 feet from Katrina's bed. The letter is sealed with wax and the family's official seal.

Contents of Granger's letter to Katrina whenever she takes it to read it:
    Spoiler:

    My fair lady,
I have had the opinion for several days now that we are being followed as we prepare for your blessed event. They draw ever closer and ever more bold as I write. I have placed you in the safety of this inn, I hope that I have not erred in judgement. I will take the carriage further down the road and set a trap for those who pursue us. I will find out their intentions and only after determining whether they are a threat - and therefore dealing with it - will I return to you. I believe it is safe to trust the innkeeper and his superstitious wife. I do not vouch for any who are in your room, though. They were there and asleep before I arrived. You will have to decide that for yourself. But you know you are better trained at reading people than I, your humble escort. Do not leave Theropa until you have heard from me again."

Gwenny looks at the letter, back to Raithen, and then back to Galen. "Jithar did it alright. He's looking for some magic thingy-ma-bobber. Always looking for magical trinkets. So he pays the local theives to steal the stuff of unusual travelers. The city guard has been increased to thwart his efforts and they patrol the outside of the inns nightly now. But I guess he has given 'em magical means to get in the rooms without using the front door, too!"

Kitrina carefully steps off the bed for a moment to grab the note and pulls it back. She pulls the sheet over her a bit and then opens and reads the letter. She sighs, and looks around. "They took everything? Even my clothes?" She looks around, paying particular attention the men inside the room, clearly growing more disgusted and angry about the whole ordeal. She looks somewhat relieved to see one of her traveling dresses set aside near her bed, though she wished it wasn't one that looked like it had been worn and not washed reciently.

"Is there some place a little more private I could change and freshen up?" She asks, fairly sweetly dispite the obvious anger in her eyes.

Turing to the others, glaring out the innkeepers, "Would it have not been a wise thing to warn us of these events before we rested here?"

Turning again to the others in the room, "So, shall we discuss a course of action, I for one would greatly like my gloves back..."

    All:

Raithen replies to Galen's inquiry, "Only if you believe the rumors. You ask anyone in this town if they've ever seen this Jithar in the flesh. You'll not get a single answer in the positive, I'd wager. People like to make up stories to blame other people when things go the wrong way. Old evil mages secretly controlling the land? Like I always says to Gwenny here, if he were that powerful, why's he waste time stealing through the means of common theives?"

Gwenny pushes Raithen out of the room in a playful, yet wounded manner. "The lady needs to change, and you've got all the woman you need in mom."

Raithen adds from outside the room as Gwenny pushes him down the hallway, "If you want to equip yourselves, the regent has established a program where the victims of the theives actions can sign out equipment on rental. If you find out who is really behind the theives actions and you put a stop to it you get to keep the weapons and your rent is erased! I even know an armorsmith if you need one ..." His voice trails off as Gwenny pushes him further down the hall.

Once Raithen leaves, Derik sits up for the first time, revealing he is awake. He responds to Galen, "Sir, I agree. The lady needs to robe in private. I for one will leave the room until she is ready. Then perhaps we can come back into the room and discuss the matters while the rest of us prepare?" He moves to the door so Katrina can dress alone.

    Warrick Steel, Human Ranger

Warrick followed the others out of the common room, thoughts of a breakfast to calm his throbbing head and empty stomach. With a final grab he snatched up his worn cloak that he was using as a blanket that evening.

"Food, supplies . . . and vengeance - maybe, in that order," Warrick commented. "This program has me wary . . . perhaps the regent enjoys having travelers indebted to him. It would appear to be the case since none have recovered their items as yet . . . have they?"

Supplies...then vengeance...we have no funds, how are does he plan on getting supplies...
Following the others out to the common room, Galen did enjoy the idea of breaking the fast of the evening, looking forward to a strong brew of tea...

Finding a seat, Galen turns to those around him, "Well, my name is Galen, as you may have heard, and your names?" Smirking Galen turns his neck in slow motions to awake him self further, "Since we all seem to be in the same lot, with are things being taken, it would seem logical that we join together."

Galen watches the faces of the others around him, "I for one, would very much like my things back, or, rather fair pay for them..."
