From Tropical to Temperate climate

Can anyone help me brainstorm reasons/ideas as to why a generally tropical climate might change into a temperate one? Assume any reason, any cause; scientific, magical, cataclysm, whatever. Just throw some ideas into the mix.

I'm not a scientist, but I think if you close a source of water flow, it might cause another area to get cooler. IIRC, that's why the Atlantic is so much colder than the Pacific 'cos north and SOuth America joined up. (I'm prolly an idiot for saying that.)

Diversion of a warm or cold ocean current (eg. if the Gulf Stream shut down England would soon have a climate like Nova Scotia). Vast forest-fires or a volcanic superplume event elsewhere in the world filling the upper atmosphere with microparticulates. Giant meteor impact elsewhere in the world.

Onset of a global ice-age. Sudden dimming of the Sun. Global cataclysm shifting the land 5,000 miles closer to one of the poles. Curse of the Sun god. Curse of the winter god. Debilitating injury to or illness of the god of the Sun, or of a warm moist breeze, or of the lannd itslef. Age, illness, or infirmity of the king. Refusal of the king to submit to sacrifice on becoming old or infirm. King avoiding sacrifice by subterfuge, substitution, or flight. Answered prayer. Misguided wish. Religious conversion of the populations. Desecration of a temple. Death of a druid. Immigration by cold-drakes. Change of diet by the populaiton altering their humours and the humours of their crops. Expiration or cessation of an ancient weather-magic.

Here are a few examples from the settings:

At one time, it is probable that Amn, Tethyr, the Vilhon Reach, Chessenta, Unther, and Mulhorand were tropical or subtropical, on Toril.
But then the Frozenfar became the Frozenfar (the northern one-quarter of the Faerunian continent gained an icecap) and the climate further south cooled dramatically. Then the Great Glacier, a product of magic, chilled things down even further.

If the magic being used to prop up the climate in the Flanaess, on Oerth, were to be halted, the climate of the Amedio Jungle, Hold of the Sea Princes, Olman Isles, Tilvanot Peninsula, Great Swamp, and northern Hempmonaland would revert to temperate. The frigid blasts from Hyperboria, the freezing of the ocean between it and the Flanaess, the continental effect of the Flanaess, and the high axial tilt of Oerth (30 degrees) would send great waves of cold Equatorward during the winter.
There is evidence that Oerth was in an Ice Age during the time of the Suloise Imperium and Baklunish Empire. Consider the hot, dry climates of those areas now.

On Ansalon, on Krynn, the climate of most of the continent was tropical or subtropical prior to the Cataclysm.
The Cataclysm created an ice cap over the South Pole, which grew northward until it touched Ansalon, and gave the southern part of the continent a subarctic climate.
In Northern Ergoth, Solamnia, Estwilde, the Khalkist Mountains, Khur, and to some extent (a very cold extent) Qualinesti, Silvanesti, and Southern Ergoth, the climate became temperate.
