M4: Under the Volcano [Nimisgod judging] -CONCLUDED

No one gets the impression that the Prince is under magical influence.

"Oh, Frump came to me a couple days ago. Or perhaps you should say, my agents found him. I'm sure you recall that my long serving wizard, Antagra, was killed by those bothersome assassins this Causticus had hired. That was only a couple months ago, and I've been looking for a new one ever since. As," he pauses here, searching for words and waving his hands vaguely, "wandering, adventuring types, you probably have no idea how difficult it is to find quality help these days. That's why I like you gentlemen so much, you see, you have proven yourselves so very capable. Frump here has told me his side of the story, of course. He says you overpowered him, and threatened his life, forcing him to take you to the Dragon's island. He figured you would be killed, and he'd be better off staying on Causticus' side. Can't really blame him, can you? You offered him no reward."

"Like many men, Frump here is motivated by fear and greed. I will pay him well for his service, and he has every reason to fear me if he betrays me. He is an old man, and wants to finish her years with luxury and prestige. I think he will do just fine."

"Of course, if one of you gentlemen is interested in the position, I might change my mind..." He looks at Tenebrynn and Ashnar questioningly.

"My Prince, it is not my responsability to judge your action, and as the leader of this great nation, you know the best interest of your country. But as one of your faithfull servant, I would like to tell you my concerns and ask you a request.

As you know, Frump had tried to kill us all when we discover him. After he killed Ashnar and we eliminate all the opposition, that he was alone and at our mercy, we spare his life, as we could have kill him and no one would have heard of the event. We are men of honor, and we offer him a chance to help the crown and help us. No, it wasn't an easy business, but a man have to face the danger and not fear death when he does it for his country. Most of us, we did it even if it wasn't our country. He could also have turn on your justice. But Frump prefered to lies to us and turns against us at the very first occasion. My concerns are what would happen when the time will come and the crown will need loyal man. Will he turns to you enemies because he judge his fortune is better on the other side? Being so close to you, this man, this 'Specialist in illusions, and sophisticated deceit' as he tell himself, what would happen if he turn upon his protector? That is my concerns, but they might be influenced by the events that happen to us during the last weeks.

My request would be, that now that Frump have found protection and luxury, that he would repair the offence he has done to your faithfull servant. Because of his attack on your loyal servant, one of us have found the way to the gods and had to come back. Because he turns us to Causticus, we had to come out of a maze of cave, fight some Causticus' followers naked, and finally, fight Causticus with some crude equipement we had taken on those goblinoid we fought before. That cause the death of another of us. We knew the danger when we accepted the mission, but I think Frump should show his regret about what he has done and pay the damage he has done to us rather than hiding under his disguise like a man who has something to hide."

Rinaldo stare a moment at Frump, directly in his eyes, sustaining his sight and trying to pierce his soul to find if that man is truly a weak mind that follow his greed and fear, or if he is a dark man who is hidding his plans to hinder the crown.

[SBLOCK=OOC]Deploying all his diplomatic skill, Rinaldo tries to convince the Prince that having Frump is not a good idea. Also, if Frump stays in favor, he ask him to repair the damage he has done to the group, at least in money if not otherwise, and get some public excuse too.

Diplomacy roll: 32[/SBLOCK]

Nurlan lets Rinaldo do most of the talking on the issue of Frump, mostly nodding his head, hoping to add a little stress to what he perceives to be the merchant's most important points, but not making the merchant noticeably more persuasive. He is distracted a little by a little offense he takes at the Prince's claim that
Manzanita (Prince Medius) said:

"The illusionist claims we offered him no reward? Indeed, offered him the biggest reward we could. His life, which by rights would have been forfeit had we brought him in to face justice. He had, after all, attacked six agents of the Crown, while in the service of a potential usurper."

Razh was totally taken aback when Frump appeared among the Prince's advisors. He had not an inkling of the traitor's presence before, and he instantly drew his weapons, ready to kill the damned benedictus without hesitation. But then Razh saw at the others and their diplomatic responses. He held back.

It takes every ounce of self-control in Rasereit's fury-filled frame to not charge Frump. And he can't help but give a scornful laugh at the Prince and mutter under his breath, "When ye get stabbed in the back, it'll be your fun'ral, ye bloody..." The last word is incomprehensible, but it's meaning is clear.

[sblock=OOC: ]I hate for Razh to get in the way of Rinaldo's phenomenal diplomacy, but I have to play him like he is, even if it means losing the prince's favor and, gods forbid, his money.[/sblock]

As Rinaldo talks, he see the dwarf reaction, he contniue to talk to the Prince, adding: "As you see, my Prince, even our proud dwarf, whose culture doesn't tolerate such offence as we have recieved from Frump await your wise judgement and will follow it."

[SBLOCK=OOC]Rae, Razh is just doing what I would like to do myself, but it wouldn,t be Rinaldo's way. I'll try to catch back that reaction.[/SBLOCK]

"I seem to recall that we might have reached an arrangement that we might 'split the loot equally' if Master Frump also agreed to equal shares of the expenses, such as my death, for which he was directly resposible, after all. I do think he did not really react to this offer - not that much of that would have come out of it, as he used his spellbook to prepare a certain spell to ensure that staying on Causticus' side was profitable. Mayhaps, we should not have been so mercyful to leave him his spellbook? Maybe we were too mercyful?
As for whether I am interested in the position for myself, I fear I would have to decline. I feel that my duty lies in places and deeds that would for now be at odds with a such time-consuming and demanding task. Not to mention that I must rebuild my talents, which have been lacking due to a sudden case of death. In terms of arcane talent, I think Frump truly is a well-chosen court wizard, as long as he stays properly motivated and as long as his specialty is well kept in mind.

"You are upset at Frump, I see." The Prince seems somewhat swayed by Rinaldo's eloquent argument.

Frump butts in. "I was just following orders. If'n I hadn't fought them, the gnolls wouldn't have torn me up!"

"Yes, but your effectiveness cost them dearly." The Prince says. "Raising the dead is not cheap, nor pleasent for the deseased. Very well. I will put in an additional 5000 gps to the reward to divide up as you see fit. I do hope you will all take up the knighthood offered and invest in our city. I think you'll find this city very friendly to commerce."

"Is that all, then? Are you ready to discuss the details of your reward with Mr. Vossinger?"

"We must thanks the great generosity of your Prince. If you ever come in need of loyal men, you can always contact me and my friend through my shop, di Senzio's Magical Shop. I am establish in Orussus, and I should soon have a new shop in the street of your capital." Rinaldo say.

he turns his attention to Frump. "If you serve faithfully your Prince, maybe we might become friend someday." tells Rinaldo, hiding his menace under this repsectfull sentence, his silver voice and his most diplomatic manners.

"We will not take more of your time, my Prince. May Gundar watch over your and your kingdom." Rinaldo bows in front of the Prince before he prepare himself to follow Vossinger.

[SBLOCK=OOC]Everyone may add 714.28 gp to your money. And for the people who wanted to end there vendetta against Frump will have to wait, as he seems to have diplomatic immunity. Anynone think the hand would kill Frump for 5000 gp? ;) [/SBLOCK]

Ogrin scratches his beard, considering their options. He decides it might be prudent to not insult the prince further and nods at Rinaldo to suggest they should accept the offer.

[SBLOCK=OOC]Rinaldo, please disregard what Ogrin owes Tenebrynn in your calculations - I may do a bargain with him in items (or ship shares! :) ) instead of money, but we'll settle that privately.

This would bring Ogrins share to: 1648.75 (equal share from loot) + 714.28 (Frumps reimbursement) = 2363.03gp. Add 500gp for the reward and he has 2838gp. Ship + Armor is 2665, leaving some gold for other expenses.[/SBLOCK][SBLOCK=Tenebrynn]This is likely said later on, after the dealings with the prince and his cohorts are finished.

"Tenebrynn, let's settle our monetary agreements. I've borrowed two-hundred and twenty-five pieces of gold from you. Now, to be honest, I have need of the money. If I'm to keep the ship, I'll need cash to pay the crew, port taxes and repairs. So, I'm wondering if I can interest you in some potions...

I have here a potion to restore weakness caused by poisons, diseases or other misfortunes. Also, I've heard it tastes like apples, with a hint of cinnamon. I bought it for three hundred, and Rinaldo claims he can sell it for almost two hundred. Would this be a satisfactory deal to you? If not, perhaps I can interest you in a share of my shipping company..."
Ogrin continues into the a similar sales pitch as he did to Rinaldo a bit earlier (see that post for details)[/SBLOCK]As they leave the throne room, Ogrin whispers to Rinaldo, audible enough so the others in the party can hear it, "Just out of curiosity - what would a scroll with a magical force trap, and a scroll with a spell to hide a magic aura cost at your fine establishments? Why I'm wondering? Oh, no reason, really..."

OOC: That's a scroll of explosive runes, and a scroll of Magic Aura, in case it wasn't obvious :]
