I've played and had a lot of fun doing so. But the system didn't make it great the people playing did. But that's always what makes a game great. The rules though do add to the fun the players create.
This thread has actually prompted me to dig out my dusty, old copy of the HM phb. Reading it again really does get the juices flowing. Perhaps I just wasn't ready when I first tried it years ago...
