Notes on the Aether (Rae judging)

"Enough of your foolishness, Keldar!" says the dwarf irritably. "You'll be having Master Thyrin assume that he's killed someone who came to save him, and that's a malicious burden to lay on anyone, even in jest."

"Rest assured, Thyrin, we all survived - though if we had not had the spread of skills and talents which we all possess, it is less certain that we would have. Certainly your defenses have proven most effective ones."

"Now, are you all right? Not in need of any healing? Do you want us to escort you to town for a rest, or is there anything further we can do here?"

Tarag pauses, then slaps his forehead. "Oh, I've just remembered - we did not disable the summoning device for fire elementals downstairs, in the furnace flue. We simply closed the grate, trapping the summoned elemental inside. Can you deal with the creature safely, now that you have access to your spellbooks?"

Then Tarag takes a step closer and says more discreetly, "Impressive handiwork, by the way. I was wondering - being a Smith myself - if you would be interested in some form of collaboration at some point? Not that you need to concern yourself about that at the moment ... but I thought I'd ask."

"It very easily could have happened, and then we'd be standing here eulogising me," says Keldar. "Or we'd be walking back to Orussus bitterly lamenting my demise, and Master Thyrin would still be waiting for aid. No, Thyrin, I noticed the slab device in time. No one was killed, though twice I needed to save Galwynn's life. Or was it three times? But unless I am mistaken, two men did die here - these are their ashes scorched into the floor."

Rapture listens to the conversation, slightly bemused.

"Your water friend said that you should wait a long while before talking to him again, but I expect you to have your hands full for a while repairing what damage we may have caused m'lord."

"We were very conscientious," Keldar interjects. "I did spill a bit of water in the kitchen, though, so mind your step there. And possibly your couch has some burn marks on the back, from the fire spurter hidden in the fireplace. Muddy footprints are also possible. Couldn't be helped. It's raining outside."

"Mister Thyin, sir," Tommy stammers, "We were hired by an assistant of Rilithorne's, a man named Arngrim, to fetch a certain set of notes from you, relating to some joint research the two of you have been conducting. Of course, once we saw your situation we couldn't leave you trapped, so we have directed our efforts to freeing you. Now that you are safe, I'm sure you would rather be putting your home back in order than playing host to a bunch of scorched, dripping adventurers, but, um, there is still the matter of the notes. Do you know what Rilithorne was after?"

Thyrin looks mortified when Keldar mentions the crushed halfling. "You- I-," he stutters, but then Tarag cuts in.

"Ah. Ah! Aha! Right, a joke." He cocks an eyebrow. "Very good. Glad it was a joke, I'd hate to be responsible for anyone's death. Well, anyone besides those two. They deserved their fate, blasted thieves. But the notes! You're right, you came for the notes! Please, follow me downstairs." He walks down the stairs to the library desk. After stacking up some papers on the desk, he adds the stack to a brown leather bound binder wrapped with a mithral ribbon, crammed with pages of all sizes and parchment types. "These are them! Some notes on my discussions with various elementals, and my comments on the experiments we've been conducting."

"And truly, don't worry about any messes you've made. I value my life more than my cleanliness. And besides, I have spells to take care of that. Now then, I'm sure Rilithorne didn't suggest that you might have to bail me out of my own tower defenses, so there's the matter of compensating you for your time, effort, and considerable risk. If it hadn't been for you all, Antonidas only knows how long... Well, you have my most sincere gratitude. As you can see, I am a bit of a wizard, and am capable of crafting many wondrous things! Tarag, good dwarf, I am quite busy with my experiments these days, but perhaps someday in the future, when I have more free time, I will reconsider your offer of partnership."

"For now, my brave adventurers, I hope you will each accept my offer of magical craftings of your choice, each of a value less than 3000 crowns. I can forge and enchant arms and armor on my second floor, and I can craft various magical items of wondrous nature. I also have gems, but I'm afraid I can't afford more than half my crafting value in gems, so 7,500 gold's worth to divide amongst the lot of you would have to suffice. After all the crafting is done, if the market value is less than 15,000 crowns, I will pay you half the difference in gems."

"I believe Rilithorne will have pay for you as well, upon receiving the notes. It will take me some time to craft your items, but if you bring him the notes and then return, I should be finished."

[sblock=OOC: ]So in other words, you may each request armor (and/or shields), weapons, and/or wondrous items with a total value of less than 3000. If you have the extra cash, you may supply it at a 1-to-2 basis with market value. That is, if you want a +2 studded leather armor (valued at 4175gp), Thyrin would require (4175 - 3000) / 2 = 587.5 additional gold.

If you don't use all of your crafting value, Thyrin will compensate at a 2-to-1 basis. That is, if you only want a +1 rapier (valued at 2320gp), Thyrin would give you (3000 - 2320) / 2 = 340 gold (in gems, which may be sold in Orussus at 100% value).

For reference, Rilithorne offered 200 gold each, plus extra depending on what's actually going on. (Keldar already received an 80gp advance.) And Thyrin will give a temporary loan, so you can pay for extra crafting with Rilithorne's money. Chances are high that Rilithorne will at least double your pay, since you did indeed encounter a "Worst Case Scenario".[/sblock]

ooc: Tommy received an advance of 75g as well. Which is just as well, since it puts a headband of intellect out of reach, whereas without considering the advance, it was just barely possible, but would leave Tommy completely penniless. :)

[sblock=OOC: ]Trouvere asked me in an email about Thyrin's crafting reward. To clarify, the idea is not to make Thryin your personal craft-o-matic and have him churn out MW items for you at half price. Rather, he is offering to enchant items for you, and he just so happens to be a bit of a smith, so he'll craft them as well. The crafted items should be magical in nature, not just "MW rapier".

You guys are great players, so I trust you not to abuse the offer. I'll apply a common sense filter to your requests, so don't worry about it. It wouldn't hurt to ask Thyrin, at the very least.[/sblock]

"Th-th-th-th-" says Keldar for a while, before giving himself a shake. "Three thousand crowns. Yes. Of course. That's very kind of you. Although I'm very tempted to avail myself of your weaponsmithing skills, I already promised Tarag here that he'd have the honour of making the Warbray rapier. I don't think I could afford a magic sword, because I have a few ideas for other magical items. But I'll need to discuss them with you, to see if they can be made, or if they're just nonsense I've read in tales. At your leisure, of course. I'm happy to stay in Grenton another day or two, if need be."

"You are most generous m'lord, thank you." Rapture says with a curtsy.

OOC: Rapture will probably end up with a magic Bastard Sword. Mithril Breastplate is too expensive, and most of the 4K items she can't afford. Is it only 1 item? Or will he do two if they're less than that? Not trying to abuse it, just trying to figure it out. Cloaks of resistance are always nice and simple, but I won't complain if that's not the case.
