Taelythenihel, and Ossa trailing, walk over to Ruud. "Wux ocuir erekess sjach? How did you enjoy your lunch?" [sblock=Draconic]You saw through the illusion?[/sblock]
Ruud starts out in draconic, "It is my specialty." He continues in common "The meals have become much better since you became the cook."

Ruud doesn't nap this time, but merely walks around the wagons a few times to stretch his legs before climbing back on the wagon he's been riding in.

"I think you are growing used to Milak's cooking, Ruud; I have cantrips to spare only for one meal a day," says Taelythenihel. She quirks one silver eyebrow as she looks at the gnome. "Old bones and gristle from yesterday will leave stomachs uneasy, but I hope all were satisfied by my simple creation."

[sblock=OOC]It seems that every time I set aside some time to update this thread, something else comes up. :( This post is just to say, "Fear not! Do not give up hope! Excitement is just around the corner ... well, down the road a bit."[/sblock]Allistra makes no comment as Taelythenihel and Ossa return from the woods. She looks with compassion, and a faint unease, at the ever-silent companion. But she says nothing to anyone, just eats her meal and then rounds up the group to get underway.

By mid afternoon they are well and truly into forest. The road has become a dirt track which winds its way past clumps of stunted trees, overshadowed and dwarfed by tall, spreading oaks wearing a kirtle of fresh spring green.

The riders make their way with ease but those in the wagons have to duck low-hanging branches. On one occasion Valdaris, in Milak’s wagon which today is in the lead, has to duck and scramble backwards and to the side to evade a spiny encounter with a too close holly tree. When he remonstrates with the driver, the dwarf just chuckles and replies, “He, he. What's th' matter? Skin nae thick enaw, laddie?”

Milak snorts. " Ha! mah driving's braw. Ah can handle a cuddie better than most can handle their liquur - an' Ah can handle mah liquur an aw!"

He chortles at his own wit, and snaps the reins on the horses backs ...

Ciprinus rides slowly at the rear, admiring the mighty oaks, that rise from the ground and grow to the sky. He is delighted to be into the forest, and in presence of his tree.

The road has become narrow and twisting. Overhanging branches slap frequently at the sides of the wagons and the party time and again must duck their stiff embrace. Allistra, at the head of the column, gently chaffs those on the wagons. The lead wagon - with Milak at the reins - negotiates a sharp corner and finds itself suddenly on the bank of a stream.

The waters, bright blue in the spring sunshine, are wide and shallow and very, very clear. Speckled salmon flash into view, and as quickly disappear into the distance. A couple of those would make a fine meal sizzling in the pan - it’s enough to make the mouth water.

No sooner do Milak and Valdaris notice the salmon darting through the water than they are apprised of another, much more dangerous presence. A great, shaggy bear rises towering onto its hind legs. The open mouth from which cavernous growls issue is hung with massive teeth, gleaming with saliva and water and salmon’s blood. It stands, swiping with massive forepaws, before dropping back on all fours and charging towards the party.

Before anyone can react, there is a scream, followed by a loud splash. Allistra’s steed, spooked by the sudden appearance of the bear, has reared and thrown the caravan marshall from the saddle. She falls backward into the water, at the mercy of the charging beast.

With an alacrity he’s never shown before, Milak whips up the horses and drives the wagon in-between Allistra and the bear. He hauls mightily on the reins to bring the horses to a foundering halt, using the wagon to shield his employer from harm.

The bear, stymied by the appearance of this mobile barrier, roars in frustration and rears up, ready to do battle.

Hp 13, Ac 18 (ff 16)

Valdaris draws his sword (and shield if poss) and clambers atop the wagon as Milak draws the caravan to a halt, ready to drop down and plunge it into the bear at the first sign of provocation. He holds off if nobody is in immediate danger and shouts instructions at the others in case they are overcome with fear.

"Allistra. Get to your feet!… Ciprinus. Can you tame this beast?!"
