D&D 4E Women in 4E

I've harped about this before, but I still think it's relevant to the image and evolution of the game: I hope we get to see different representations of women in 4E.

While many campaigns I've participated in have had convincing, dynamic female PCs and NPCs, the general theme of women in D&D is "eye-candy in chainmail bikinis". I think art has a lot answer for (see attachments).

RPGs (and D&D in particular) are never going to have a wide female audience - no chicky is ever going to sidle up to you and whisper in your ear that your tactical use of fireball made her hot - but I think that by taking women seriously in published game material we can reduce the widespread image of D&D as an escapist refuge for misogynist social retards.

I'd like to see art and description of squat, scarred female fighters wearing proper armour, and perhaps even some she-mages who don't have "Tenser's pert D-cup support" memorised each day.

I know that many players consider fantasy demi-porn as one of the pleasant perks of the game, but I'm willing to give it up in order to add some dimension to the campaign world.

Any takers?

The Internet is the current escapist refuge for misogynist social retards... so you might take whatever answers you get here with a grain of salt. ;)

So I have to admit that I have never gotten a very anti-women vibe from D&D. In fact, usually quite the opposite. ("Wait, there's a dwarven chick who's one of the pirate kings? Awesome!")

But then I also don't pay a lot of attention to the art, so.

I'll get you for saying that. Just as soon as I finish trawling the tentacle hentai webring.

I wouldn't say it's ever been stridently anti-women, but "plot-fodder damsel in distress" is the default mode, generally.

I don't have a problem with armor spikes.

I don't have a problem with piecemeal equipment.

I don't have a major problem with Hennet McBuckles.

I don't have a problem with a bit o' cheesecake (or beefcake, as the case may be). It's hardly more misogynistic than the current cover of Cosmopolitan magazine or the latest add for the hot new fragrance.

As for this...

Dunno 'bout you, but the gals I have gamed with love blowin' up orcs as much as the next person, and don't, by and large, play D&D so that anything can "make her hot."

I think D&D DOES treat women quite seriously in published game material, at least nowadays. And D&D will never loose the image of being an escapist refuge for misogynist social retards any more than pocket protectors will loose the image of being tools of the painfully nerdy.

The important thing, in all of this, is to realize things go deeper than the surface image.

Anyway, have fun on your soapbox.

IME, many D&D damsels in distress are male. ("Rescue Zenith Splintershield!")

I mean, seriously, I can't even fault D&D for being heterocentric, as I can name several contrary instances.

Oy. I started this sort've thing over on the WotC boards. Expect a lot of:

"We see Krusk's hairy legs, so it's even!"
"There are Ugly monstrous women showing their boobs in the art, so it's okay!"

Before anyone comments, I want you to take a look at the image below. How would you like those dudes looking back at you from the PHB in various levels of nudity?

After all, I'm willing to bet that the girls who play D&D like sexy men, as do some male gamers. ;)
