1st Generation: Chainmail (original version), tabletop wargames, cardboard chits in a cup instead of dice rolling, approximately 1971 to 1973.

2nd Generation: introduction of 1E AD&D, approximately 1976 up to 1979.

3rd Generation: introduction of 2E AD&D, approximately 1985 to 1987.

4th Generation: introduction of 3E D&D and D20 system, 2000 to present.

I first played D&D in 1980. I remember going out and buying the PH with my own hard earned money (I was 13 and delivered newspapers). I soon bought a DMG and a MM and began running my own game. IIRC, that was a very Monty Haul campaign. But it was loads of fun for a bunch of kids. My games are nothing like those anymore, but they are still loads of fun. I guess that is all that matters. :D

Thanks Gary.

Your generations are a bit off, since 2E came out in 1989.

You're probably right, since my information base is tenuous. My readings of the histories may have been a little confused, but it said at right about 1985 2nd edition was being playtested by TSR.

Maybe? Close enough? Too late for me to fix it though. Sorry if the timeframes are a little off.
