Though they've generally hid behind the scenes, one way or another almost every gamer hears whispers about the dreaded and beloved dice gods. They give and they take away. They may seem to abandon an unfortunate gamer to a series of untimely 1s, only to roll triple 20s against the BBEG. Or perhaps they deceive you into believing that they love you, handing you 17s and 19s all night long, until a pair of fateful 1s leave your character as nothing more than ash and torn shreds of character sheet.
The decision to add the dice gods to the 4E pantheon, according to Wealthy Breadmaker, lead designer of 4E, was a difficult one, but ultimately it was decided that leaving newbies in the dark about the dice gods was unfair. Many gamers are angry at what is seen as a futile attempt to label and give rules and stats to the dice gods, for the dice gods are statless. Nothing can occur without their lucky permission, and all that goes against their plans is halted by a harsh 1.
