Community Question

This is a question, not a complaint. I am hoping that several will respond (as the question has a ton of variables). I am also prepared and expecting some negative response mixed with some positive and absolutely useless ones.

I've noticed recently that there is a new trend. I don't entirely know how to classify it, but lately I've noticed that squatting (sitting in rooms for several minutes to hours idly) has increased. I've also noticed that these squatters either do not interact or leave immediately leave when another character pops into the room. Can anyone let me in on why this is happening and why is it so common lately?

I realize that there are RP cliques. I'm guilty of it myself. I'm just curious when it became so evident that people seem so reluctant to branch out and RP with other members of the community?

Most those people, at least from my observations, are only waiting for a certain person to wander in to RP and in most cases them walking out as another walks in may just be bad timing. If they've been there awhile and got sick of the fact that no one wandered in they may have just logged out without knowing your there.
Or, as is my case with the possibly two characters I bother bringing to this place anymore, they have certain rooms they refuse to go in. I myself avoid CRT and only go there if a certain person has asked me too. And even then they had better have a damn good reason why they can't come elsewhere.
Just my thoughts, probaly wrong but hey never claimed I was right!

I am horribly guilty. The reasons...time. Right now, my RP time is pretty valuable, and that's not to say I dont want my character to interact with new people or whatever, but there are some things that she needs to get done before I indulge myself. This is often within the clique, though can be for any particular reason. As such, I'll 'leg it' when someone foreign comes on/in, mainly because I dont want to get caught up. I figure it's worse to RP a few minutes, then leave abruptly, than to start RPin' at all.

Am I wrong?

Ariel.

You're not wrong, I've done the same before, and I'm sure the majority of the people here on enworld have aswell, whether they realise it or not.

Bystander.

Along with the other responses given, alot of the times those "Squatters" As you put it.. I call them campers my self, are in fact people whole just close the browser window, and not hit that red dot to the top right of the fash chat window to log them out, and I've realised, by testing this myself, that by just closing the browser, the flashchat system does not automatically recognise you have logged out all the time and sometimes wont realise until the computer you're on is switched off. so it's possible alot of the people don't even realise they're doing it.

Hope that rant helps ^_^

I have taken to not giving out my msn address or asking for the MSN of some people are rp with . This gives the rp a freshness and a freedom from preconcieved ideas. Sometimes I lurk in the lounge so that they know I am about when we havn't rped in a while.

Some times I lurk waiting for other random people to turn up and I get called away suddenly or just let my attention wander... Seriously I can sit in there for hours with nothing happening so I play scrabble with the computer or get up and do the washing up. Some times this results in me missing people coming and going

I'm guilty of it myself, as some of my characters are simply waiting for something to happen before they reveal themselves to actually be there...

Ambush!

I deal with people squatting and camping by interacting with private messaging them, at least to get an OCC conversation started.

By the way, though, this is no 'new' trend. It's been around ever since chat rooms were invented...and bars...and school...and any social situation!

Yeah, there are lots of reasons. The ghosting (that's what I call the incomplete log out - and I don't think I've ever noticed a red dot; I usually get stuck with a ghost of my character when something happens with my computer and I have to shut the window or task manage out of it or whatever).
Some wait for others. Usually I see this happening with the lounge. Sometimes it's not just a clique thing - if there's a plotline going on with a particular character and specific other characters, where the person needs more information before playing, or the character has to be escorted (like a child under 12 in the Tavern) sometimes they're stuck having to wait. So, they stay logged in so the person or people they're waiting for can see that they're on.

I'm guilty of having a character sitting in an empty room while I do other stuff. Seriously, who wants to sit there staring at a mostly blank screen if no one is in the room with your char? Usually, when I do that, I'm good about popping back to the window and checking now and then. But, occassionally, if nothing happens for too long, I'll completely forget I'm even logged into ISRP. Which makes it difficult for anyone who finally does come in - pming and interacting OoC doesn't help if the person's not even looking at the window. ;)
