Encounter Areas vs. PC Sight

how do you plan to handle encounter area layout?
are you showing the whole encounter area or just the parts the PCs can see?
i personally show them only what their characters are able to see of the area...
so it´s a lot of fun when they get pushed to other parts o the area and encounter even more foes...
player: "just 4 kobolds? what kind of challenge is that??"
me: "as you tide of iron the kobold around the corner you notice 6 more beasties awaiting you eagerly"
pro and con suggestions maybe?

I generally show them what they can see first. Also, they might 'spill into' another encounter area while still engaged in the first- this can be bad, bad news...
