Players making stuff for themselves.

Currently it costs as much to make something youself as it is to buy it.

Would you allow Players to manufacture poison, magic items etc cheaper if they searched for the materials to make them? Also would you allow this to be counted besides the usual treasure parsels?

This would open up a nice character concept (those who use poisons). Although another option would be to make a Paragon Class that specialises in poisons, perhaps making it able to create poisons for 25% of the normal price.

I've been working on Rituals that function to bridge the gap between 3rd and 4th edition for crafting that handle these exact sort of situations.

Once I get closer to a final product, I'll post it in the Houserules section.

Sure!

Of course, searching around for the raw materials for poisons and/or magic items is possibly a lengthy process... the best way to model it might be with a skill challenge.

If they succeed, they get some XP and some treasure -- treasure in the form of an item discount, in this case.

So basically they'll get exactly the amount of money they would get per level except that instead of taking the short way which is simply beating it out of some people they'd have to spend long journeys away from towns in distant and dark forbidden places to find rare herbs and try to find out ways to pluck the feathers of an elusive phoenix?

There must be some way to reward players in 4.0 for ingenuity and enterprise.

A skill challenge like this might consist of 4 to 8 rolls.

A similarly-scaled combat might consist of 12 to 18 rolls.

I'm not convinced the combat option is the "short way" for the players.

If they're especially ingenious or enterprising, giving them a bonus on the challenge is certainly within the letter and the spirit of the rules.

Just a note -- that's not actually the case. Page 224 points out that those are base market prices. Actual purchase cost is typically 10 to 40 percent higher -- which works out to an average of 25% higher.

So you do save money by rolling your own.
