Dacen puts a finger to his lips, takes off his leather helmet and cups an ear.

Cautiously Xenon walks down the stairs. The undead beggar -- who has done little other than follow along -- pats Xenon on the arm as the goes by, as if to wish him luck. Xenon passes through the shadowy illumination and into the near darkness of the chamber at the bottom of the stairs.

The chamber is a square, about 40 feet to a side, with two exits, both in the southwestern corner of the room. Five columns support the vaulted ceiling. Xenon sees a large shape, seemingly humanoid but bulkier than two men, hunched behind the northeasternmost column. Judging by its undefined shape, Xenon guesses the creature wears some sort of large cloak.

What's more, Xenon is quite certain that he could not have entered the chamber unseen by the lurking, brutish sentry.

Dacen reacts slowly. Moving into the room and then hesitsting uncertainly. He then moves towards the doors, attemting to block escape routes or possible reinforcements. If he can do this and get a clear shot he'll take it.
