Yes, the creatures somehow managed to move next to us in the surprise round and still attack.
The only thing Ripper could do in the surprise round is to throw one of his daggers at them.
But then he have to spend his next move/standard action to draw another one or effectively loose two of his feats.

WD, drawing a weapon is a minor action. Furthermore, even in a surprise round, if you wanted you could charge, 'cause it's a standard action.

Which is what the creatures might have done... besides the fact that they no longer need to play by PC-rules in 4e

I also start to think they charged.

Hm, shouldn't I get a surprise round vs them before the other surprise round?

I saw them, but they didn't saw me...

yes, the creatures did, indeed, charge during the surprise round. Yes it's a surprise round, and thus you only get to take a single action.
Ash, Ripper, and Verity get to act on the surprise round, takign a single action. THEN, Keira and Illian get to act before the creatures in the first 'normal' round of initiative, then I'll post an update including what the creatures do.

Ripper cannot charge as he's got no straight path to charge along. If you want to set up for sneak attack, your best bet is to move down one square for your surprise round and then use your action next turn to shift out of cover and stab the thing (Assuming they dont move or notice you on their turn).

I also need Illians actions in the normal round (as pointed out above, Illian and Keira both get their full round before the badguys get to go again)

you don't have to charge in a straight line in 4e iirc
verity will jus't divine glow with no movement. Will update when I get a chance.

    Yeah. I just checked.
This is the charge movement restriction (PhB pg 287):
Movement Requirements: You must move at least
2 squares from your starting position, and you must
move directly to the nearest square from which you
can attack the enemy. You can’t charge if the nearest
square is occupied. Moving over difficult terrain
costs extra squares of movement as normal.
There's no requirement that you "move in a straight line".

So Ripper and the creatures can zig and zag as much as they like.

    Charge
    CHARGE: STANDARD ACTION
✦ Move and Attack: Move your speed as part of the
charge and make a melee basic attack or a bull rush
at the end of your move.
✦ +1 Bonus to the Attack Roll: You gain a +1 bonus
to the attack roll of your basic attack or bull rush.
✦ Movement Requirements: You must move at least
2 squares from your starting position, and you must
move directly to the nearest square from which you
can attack the enemy. You can’t charge if the nearest
square is occupied. Moving over difficult terrain
costs extra squares of movement as normal.
✦ Provoke Opportunity Attacks: If you leave a
square adjacent to an enemy, that enemy can make
    an opportunity attack against you.
✦ No Further Actions: After you resolve a charge
attack, you can’t take any further actions this turn,
unless you spend an action point to take an extra
    action.

Hmmm.. Well, for my interpretation, first note the Highlighted portion. If you wish to interpret it differently when you're DMing, that is of course your perogative, but it seems to clearly state you must take the shortest (Most Direct) path available.
Direct: From the latin Directus, meaning straight.
