Round 4, continued

Kilbeth steps back and charges, but the guard ducks beneath his horns at the last moment. It proves to be a mistake, as Kilbeth with a surge of energy brings Kristen up in a bloody arc that nearly bisects the guard's neck. It has time for one last desperate, hate-fueled swing at Les before it collapses, but it glances harmlessly off of her armor. (ooc: Goring charge misses. Evasive strike hits for 34, since quarry damage is maximized. Kilbeth gains 3 HP. G2 dies, and misses Les with its dying blow. I put Kilbeth in W10 since V10 would need an athletics check, and I don't think it makes a difference. If you prefer V10 for some reason I haven't seen, give me an athletics check.)

Raiyek runs around the bar. After pausing to lay a healing hand on Les, he charges Hoofchew, bellowing a challenge. His aim is true, and the orc roars with pain. (ooc: hits, Hoofchew takes 14. Les heals 6. Hoofchew is no longer Raiyek's quarry.)

ooc: Balth, you said you were going to shift SW and then shoot. This will provoke an OA from Hoofchew; is that your intention? I don't see anywhere Balth can shift to escape an OA except north, which will require an athletics check. (And which I'll only allow because Balth is an Elf and can ignore difficult terrain when shifting.)

I believe what Balth intends to do is shift SW to X13, then use the shift from Nimble Strike to shift another square SW to W14 before making the attack so that he doesn't take an OA. I think that works, right?[/sblock]

Actually, if you look, I shifted twice, not once. Once via my move action, the other as part of the nimble shot before the attack.

Hope that clears up the confusion. I should be a chess knight's move away from Hoofchew to the southeast.

Round 4, continued

Before Balth moves, there is an unearthly moaning sound from the corpses of the two guards. A ghostly form rises from each and drifts toward Hoofchew struggling as if against some inexorable etheric current. The forms merge with Hoofchew, who looks slightly stronger and even more insane. (ooc: I forgot earlier; Hoofchew heals a tiny bit when nearby henchmen die. Total 4 hp for the two.)

Balth drops his burning cloak and dances southward, firing an arrow at Hoofchew, but his mind is more on evading counterattacks than on aiming. His shot goes wide. (ooc: Balth takes 8 fire damage, misses, and ends up in X14)

Larinza gives Cross an encouraging word, then clambers up onto the bar and slashes at Hoofchew. Her strike is ineffective, but with a surge of energy she strikes again, this time drawing blood. (ooc: Cross spends a surge and gains 7 HP, and is no longer bloodied. Larinza misses, then hits with an AP. Hoofchew takes 11 damage and Raiyek gets an OA if Hoofchew shifts.)

Vashik, still shaking from the poison, stands and steps away from Hoofchew, taking a moment to settle his defenses. (5 poison damage. Vashik shakes off the AC penalty.)

The last guard pauses, looking to Hoofchew for guidance.

Hoofchew turns and darts for the stairs, heedless of Raiyek and Larinza's blades. From most of the way up the stairs he turns and glares malevolently at Raiyek, once again shaking the paladin's faith in his defenses. Then he claps his tattooed hands together and utters a word that none of you can remember later except in nightmares. An explosion of force (ooc: Hoofchew moves to Z16, provoking OAs from Raiyek, Larinza, and Vashik (but not Balth, since he has a ranged weapon readied). Assuming those don't kill him, he hits Raiyek with an Eye of Wrath. Raiyek takes -4 AC (save ends). Finally, he drops Chaos Hammer on W11, missing Raiyek but hitting Larinza, Kruk, and Kilbeth. Raiyek takes 4 force damage, the others take 8 and are knocked prone.)

The last guard shrugs off nearly all of the heat from Cross's flaming sphere, and swings his flail at Cross. He nearly entangles his own legs in the flail, and beats a hasty retreat to the stairs near Hoofchew. (ooc: G3 takes 1 damage from the flaming sphere after resistance. He misses Cross (that's three nat 1's in a row, plus one on Hoofchew's turn...) and moves, provoking an OA from Cross.)
