Idea for a new game we can play on this board

Title: Battle of The Gods

Summary: As all gods tend to do, the gods of the world (X) have decided to hold a contest to determine which god is superior. Rather than fighting each other, the gods will each select a mortal champion to represent him or her. Each champion has the same quest: to find the Golden Apple of Discord. The apple is guarded at the bottom of a massive dungeon, which was built by the gods themselves. Each god built a single level and tried to both make it as easy as possible for his champion to get past and as hard as possible for any other champion to get past. The guardian of the apple was created by the head god and its powers and abilities are unknown to the fighting gods.

How this works:

Each player plays a god. The player creates the god, the god's religion, domains, portfolio etc. The player also creates a mortal champion, a level of the dungeon, and a church to back the champion up. The player can ONLY use material from the SRD and all material created for this contest is considered OGL. At the end of this contest, all the materials submitted for the contest are assembled into a netbook/PDF for all to read.

The game is run by me and another GM. We run the game similarly to the IR thread, in that there are no hard rules just common sense and interpretation.

That's the basic concept. What do you all think?

Sounds like fun. Some more details? Like, size of the dungeon, characteristics of the champion, and all. Also, what is the church supposed to do for the champion?

Dungeon size will be something like: 2000x2000 feet square up to 200 feet high, with anything possible inside it.

The church is there for the purposes of providing possible cohorts, followers, background for prestige classes, unique magic items (relics of said church) and so forth.

Each champion will be 1 of the following

a 12th level character using only SRD classes or new prestige classes designed by the god. Character may use ECL+1 or higher races

An appropriate creature that worships the god. For example, a fire god could choose a fire giant as a champion. Such creatures have really high ECLs but are not unbalanced for the purposes of this contest. This will have to be handled on a case by case basis, but most likely the champion will only have a few levels in a NPC class and very little magical gear compared to a 'normal' character.

Something unique as designed by the god. Again, this is a case by case basis.

Also this contest isn't to min/max the best, but rather to see who can create the best stuff. People could get together in teams to specialize in something.

Basically, each god would create:
1 level dungeon with a theme
1 champion of a cause or god
a church, Prestige classes, magic items, etc for that champion

How's that?

ECLs aren't in the SRD. There is no concept of ECL in the SRD.

We don't need ECLs. The concept of classed monsters is available AFAIK, and that's enough. Since we're dealing on a case-by-case basis, once you've stated "Ok, your champion is a fire giant, you can give him up to three class levels too" everything works.

Hey, sounds fun!

Maybe an interesting idea would be to have the people playing the God to recruit other people on the boards to be their champion. The person playing with God could work with them to create the champion, tell them about his level of the dungeon, etc.

Then, there could be some way for the Gods to attempt to look on and manipulate things, but only in a limited way and perhaps even to attempt to corrupt the champions of other Gods.

This would create more of a dichotomy between God and champion.

This is all possible. However, the only stipulation I want to put in is that I want to streamline running the game as much as possble. While we certainly could do this on a turn by turn basis I think that would take too long. I would rather do something like:

"The Fire Champion enters the Water God's level. How does he tackle it?"

"The Fire champion will use his necklace of fireballs to take out the golem, simply slaughter the gnolls, and then answer the riddle at area 5 with "Boots""

"The fire champion defeats the golem, but is surprised by the gnolls (spot roll 12) and takes 85 damage from them. etc. etc."

Remember the idea is to see who makes the best stuff, no who is the best player.
