I love trying my hand at these requests. I'd probably start with a spear fighter (great weapon build) so he can fight with a shield, but doesn't have to. I'll go 10 levels in for a good idea and suggest a Path
- I'd take Tide of Iron and Crushing Surge for at-wills
- at 1st level, I'd probably take Pinning Sweep (E) and Lasting Threat (D); Improved Vigor for a feat to emphasize the Spartan's lasting nature.
- Utility 2 I'd take Shielded Sides, and Advance Lunge for Encounter 3; Surprising Charge for level 2 feat.
- at 4, I'd put focus on Strength and Dexterity for better attacks and AC/Ref. I'd also consider Martial Alacrity as a feat for flavor and effectiveness.
- Rain of Steel would be a decent level 5 daily and Unbreakable at 6; Shield Push would be a good level 6 feat
- At 7 I'd probably take come and get it
- level 8 I'd choose Weapon Focus (spears); and 9 would be good for Jackal Strike. I'd also take Defensive Resurgence at 10

For a paragon path, I'd take either Shield Adept or Pit Fighter. This would be my best choice for your average Spartan.

If you're trying to mimic the main character from the movie instead, I'd multiclass Warlord for Stand the Fallen (D5), Stand Tough (U6) and Lion's Roar (E7).

Not sure if this is what you had in mind, but I figured it's at least a decent build.

great input, better than what i had thought up. what of armor tho

If you range a bit...
I thought "battlerager" .... call it Spartan Vigor.. maybe just big weapons (axes is for barbarians - I haven't seen the show I just dont like Axes) and remove the Chain mail option. ;-) I am told however that I always think battlerager so maybe that isnt a suprise... It lets you have a lower armor fighter but still have fighter style you want, but then again in someways... only the Beast Master option really weds the ranger that close to the natures champion idea. Can you tell I like the Martial Powers book ;-)

If you'd rather achieve the look and feel over optimization, I'd say wear Chain at the heaviest, since their "plate" shirts would provide about as much protection. If you'd like a little more usability, go with Hide and call it a chain shirt, since that'll take advantage of your higher dexterity.

I always felt like the Spear and Shield Style (Dragon #368) would be a must for a build like this, since it's the only way I can remember right now to achieve reach with one-handed spears (and only with Fighter's Tide of Iron), though it requires Int 13, which is kind of a painful ability for a warrior to spend points on. Fighter's level 1 encounter, Lunging Strike, also lets you attack at increased range.

There is a great paragon path for spear and shield fighters: Draeven Marauder. It was in Dragon several months ago. It gives spear mastery (an epic feat) at 11th level and has a lot of mobility-based powers. You should also check out the article of the Eladrin city of Mithrendain. There are several powers designed for spear-users with high dexterity.

Two great feats for any spear fighter:

polearm momentum = if you push an enemy two or more squares you knock them prone

spear push= you can push enemies one extra square with spears.

tide of iron + spear push + polearm momentum is a potent combination
