SUMMARY (Cont.) [POST 4]
The Current Situation in Old City
While New City remains under martial law, Old City looms on the brink of quiet chaos. The Bluffside Regular patrols have thinned out somewhat, as Commander Reginald Oakfirst sends notices from his forced convalescence to the current captains of Old City to divert a dozen guards to help search the ruins of Sem La Vah for several missing diggers. At the same time, Lady Samantha Pomander informs the scribes in the Palace to begin drafting up notices for each of the districts that the Bluffside Militia is being called out to help with the internal protection of the city. She also has word sent to the Wizard Council and to the Teacher's Library about the unnatural discovery in the abandoned tower of the old Growers' Gate with a request for aid.

Of note, the unknown killer murdering people in the streets of the district remains at large and the Regulars are mystified as to the person's identity. Many citizens believe it is an undead thing that cannot be tracked magically. However, the guards are certain the killer is humanoid. The news of the murder of the Lord Mayor of Bluffside, Lord Horatio Hollingsworth, hasn't become public knowledge as of yet, but it isn't to hard to surmise that the people will want to blame the uncaught killer roaming the streets of Old City at night once the news goes public.

Could Phelix and his minions be responsible for it all?

Terger and Elkgrar head out of the palace with no fanfare and the knowledge that Bluffside is going to go through some major changes, politically. Terger did manage to speak to his uncle in private before leaving the palace. The conversation was short and terse. The Lord Commander told Terger to follow his instincts and get the job done. The two of them arrive at Wyndlasmere House at the same time as Rhodes and his guard escort arrive back from Oakfirst Manor. Terger notes that Thersean isn't with the ex-con. Rhodes tells the Dark Lantern and dwarven priest the details of what happened to Commander Oakfirst and an elf named Thistle Ravenwood out in the ruins of Sem La Vah. Terger had already heard that the elf paladin had died but not the full details. Commander Oakfirst had been badly hurt in the fight and would need at least two weeks of bed rest before being able to return to his duties. Thersean decided to stay at Oakfirst Manor and watch over the wounded man.

“Hopefully the others have some good news about that damn tower,” Rhodes says as he, Terger, and the others head inside the old manor house. It doesn't take long for them to learn that it hadn't gone well at all. They arrive at the door of the second-floor chapel just after young Roman heads off to search for Custodio and inform Arcanus Jardine that Towermaster Alel Monderand wants her latest report now not 'whenever she feels like it'.

Towermaster Monderand looks at Relgar. "You seem no worse for wear." He points to Lady Emilienne. "She said something about you being protected. Do you know what it is? Could it work for others?"
"I would theorize that she was speaking poetically. My 'protector', I would assume, is simply the fact that my mind functions in a more linear and logical fashion than most folk. The prospect of a dimension with no fixed natural laws holds little power to seduce my imagination, and of course I was on guard against such insinuation in the first place."
“I see,” the towermaster replies. He notes the arrival of Terger back from his meeting with The Five. “Master Alela, what did The Five have to say?”

willpell post_id=210099 time=1520876298 user_id=3993 said:
Do you suppose that simply destroying his inscriptions would prevent him from shifting back from wherever he has gone? It can't be that easy, can it?"
“I doubt it,” the towermaster muses. “If he's powerful enough to control that portal, I doubt we could prevent his return that easily.”

“The Wizard Council might be able to do it,” Arcanus Abelner suggests. “A ritual might disjoin the portal, if it isn't permanent. At the very least, it could disrupt the portal's ability to function for a short time and give us all more time to prepare for a counterattack. It could take a while to perform the casting, however. A dimensional lock spell could protect a small area in the tower, as long as it isn't warded, but such a spell would require a Fifteenth Order wizard to cast it. I don't know if there is anyone that powerful on the Council.”

“Aye,” Towermaster Monderand agrees. “I don't even think old Guildmaster Baldercon of the House of Enchantment is that powerful, and he's rumored to be one of the most skilled wizards in the city.”

“True, and not even Lady Pomander is believed to be that skilled in magic,” Sentinel Abbate adds. “Nor any of the other members of The Five. In truth, their power is mostly political. A powerful cleric could cast it too, but I can't think of anyone in the city who is that blessed. The Five tend to ostracize anyone who becomes overtly powerful.”

“There is a powerful elementalist who lives in New City, but I forget his name,” the towermaster notes. “He's an ice wizard of some renown, but he's also a bit of a recluse.”

Tellerian Hawke said:
Tim says, "I am not of your world; If there is a goddess protecting me, I would imagine that it would be the same goddess who brought me here. They said her name was Mirella, the World Goddess. And if she is protecting me, I am unaware of exactly how; I don't feel any different. But then again, I know nothing of the Arcane Arts, nor of the magicks of deities."
“If Mirella is protecting you, then you might be the best weapon against this renegade. The World Goddess chooses her own clergy and agents. It's never the other way around,” Sentinel Abbate replies. “I don't believe she has a true temple in Bluffside, however. But if she's taken note of this situation, we could be looking at a major shift in the magical nature of the entire region.”

“I agree,” the towermaster says. “It's troubling but lets worry about what we can try to control.”

Relgar fidgets nervously.
Sentinel Abbate ponders as he paces. “We could seek the help of the priests of Aoskar at the House of Portals. They have an innate sense for gates and portals. Of course, they're unlikely to help destroy it. That goes again their nature. But they could help secure it or try to shift it elsewhere. It could be very dangerous to do so but no one in Old City is going to want a portal to 'deadly places best left unknown' on their doorstep.”

OOC: Note that the deity Aoskar isn't a dead god in Kulan's cosmology. Aoskar was introduced into D&D in the Planescape campaign setting.

"I'm sure," Terger says. "The only ghosts here are memories." Terger slides the key into the lock and opens the door. Despite the worn look of the outside the inside is clean, elegant, and homely. A seal is inlaid in the marble floor of the foyer but it's unlikely that anyone but Rhodes would recognize it. A pair of staircases spiral up to a balcony of the second floor. Two doors flank either side of the foyer and a well lit hallway runs under the balcony toward the back of the house opposite the door you entered in.
While the family seal on the floor isn't one that Relgar knows off the top of his head, there is an mysticism to its design. Likely a minor arcane family without strong ties to the Wizard Council. The seal's symbology seems to merge aspects of magic and martial together.

"Bedrooms are upstairs. Help yourself to any one of them except the master bedroom. The library is at the end of the hall if you magic types want to get started."
"I will inspect this library of yours," Elkgrar says. "Hopefully it will be able to tell us what we need regarding the magical key we must acquire." The dwarf turns to Relgar. "Let us see what we can discover, eh?"

He grabs a small crystal bell from a table by the door and rings it. A few seconds later a youngish looking elven maid comes out of the door on the right. Her placid, professional look is quickly replaced by an expression of shock. "Master Klaus, we had no idea to expect you," she says.

"It is okay Eririel," Terger replies, "I did not know I was coming until earlier this evening. Please see that some cold meats and cheese are put out for my associates and bring me some ale to the study. And have Gerey light some fires in the library, lounge, and study. And please let the rest of the staff know that I am here."
Eririel curtsies and nods once. She dashes off to do Terger's bidding.

"Master Klaus?" Rhodes ponders. "So you're the previous owner of this manor, are you? Or did you inherit it?"

"That's really none of our business," Custodio notes quickly. "It's a good place to plan out what we need to do in order to get into Waldo's planar enclave. While being an Oakfirst Manor was convenient, we might as well as waved our hands up in the air and said, 'here we are' to anyone paying attention."

"Gentlemen, I would like to welcome you to Stormgrove Manor," he says. "I'll be in the study if anyone needs me," He says indicating to the door on the left.
"Stormgrove," Rhodes says. "I haven't heard that name in a long time. Even since before I was locked up." He nods to Terger before heading upstairs to pick a bedroom. Custodio watches him go but doesn't follow the convict.

Elkgrar leads the way to the library with Relgar trailing just behind the dwarven cleric. While the library's double doors stand closed, it isn't locked. Inside, you find a large room filled with rows of books that look like they haven't been looked at in years. The room is well kept up, however, and there is very little dust on the books or shelves although there are more than just traces on the medium-sized table sitting in the center of the room. A few low shelves have been covered with linen drop-clothes and one shelf in the back stands empty. There is also a glass case that stands empty as well. A cold fireplace sits along the back wall.

Elkgrar carefully pulls the drop clothes off the low shelves, which hold not just books, but also silverware, strange trinkets, and pristine clockwork timepiece. The silverware is stamped with the same seal that was on the floor of the foyer.

"Those books detail the lineage of the Stormgove Family who have lived in this region for over 500 years," a deep, melodic voice says from behind Relgar and Elkgrar. An elderly, tall black man stands at the door way. He is holding an armful of wood for the fire. He steps forward and bows without losing a single piece of wood. "I am Gerey. I will handle any comforts you may require while in Stormgrove Manor." The man heads over to fireplace and quickly gets to work building and lighting a fire. Once he has finished, he waits by the door in case either of the adventurers has a request. (If Relgar doesn't have a request, he leaves them to their work.)

"Let's take a look," Elkgrar wanders off into a short row of books and begins browsing through the titles. "An interesting selection of books. This section seems to be dedicated to the history of the city, its military traditions, and the various guilds of the city."

OOC: willpell, I'll post a roll for you in the OOC thread regarding Relgar's research results in the library.

Once inside the study Terger speaks aloud to the air. "Yep I've finally come home Sam. I know you have someone watching us so I figured I'd just acknowledge what you're thinking. I've got to deal with Kirin and Mari's death some time and this lot needs a true headquarters. So here we are. I hope you aren't laughing at this too much."
Images play out in Terger's mind. He sees his faimily in front of him as they once were in this very room. The memories of Mari are quite painful. While he sits, Eririel comes and goes twice. She leaves him a worn blanket that was once his favorite to use with Kirin on the low divan that sits near the fireplace. Eventually, Gerey comes in and lights a fire for Terger. The retired bard whistles a simple tune as he works. He doesn't say anything to Terger until just as he is about to leave.

"It is good to see you again, Kl-, Master Klaus. While I doubt you'll stay long, I am here to see to anything you might need." He pauses. "But you always were the independent sort even before you and I first came here from your father's estate."

Relgar's face colors at Puck's rebuff, and he avoids eye contact even harder than usual, attempting to focus on the research he's doing and hoping the two servants will finish their work and go away.
Gerey bows again and heads out of the library. Ten minutes later, Custodio and Big Tim appear at the library's doorway.

"Any luck yet?" the Vanquisher cleric asks.

"We've only just started," Elkgrar notes from his chair without looking up.
"Oh, sorry," Custodio replies with a yawn. "We just don't want to sit around and wait."

"Perhaps you should get some sleep then," Elkgrar suggests. "This will take some time."

"Sleep sounds like a good idea," Tim agrees. "I have not rested since being brought to this world. I am growing fatigued."

"Aye," Elkgrar sighs. "Even I can't go on forever, but I still have some strength left. I'll help Relgar for a few more hours and then pick a room, as Terger suggested."

Relgar considers his options.
It seems like an eternity since Relgar first entered New City and was captured by the guards. Forced to work for The Five and the Wizard Council. Eventually he met all those gathered in Stormgrove Manor. And then there was the fireball trap in that inn and searching the maddening tower of the alienist.

Relgar hears the voice of the Elkgrar suggest sleep. He looks up to see that both the half-ogre and the cleric entered the room the room at some point. His mind wanders and his vision blurs. He sees what looks like both Terger and Rhodes walking down the hallway towards him and the others.

'You are nearing exhaustion,' Eclipso says to him.

The next thing Relgar knows, Custodio and Elkgrar are holding him up. Puck is there too. Relgar is soon laying on a simple bed near the back of the library. Puck puts a pillow under his head and then goes back to his cleaning.

"Well, I think that a sign that we can't do anything else for tonight," Custodio whispers. "Let's all get some rest."

Big Tim nods before claiming a room. Elkgrar takes a few tomes to study with him to a nearby room. Custodio kneels down near the entrance to the library and prays before heading off to find a quiet place to sleep. Rhodes places a blanket over Relgar before heading back to his room.

Terger watches Relgar sleep for a few minutes and gives the boy Puck instruction to watch the draftsman-wizard until the boy's work is done. Terger heads off to his room. Gerey flits in and out of the library as Relgar dozes. Eventually the library goes dark and silence puts Relgar to sleep.
___

Morning in Stormgrove Manor:

Terger wakes to find Gerey opening the heavy curtains of the master bedroom. The light spills in and shocks the man awake. 'I'm in Stormgrove again? Wait, how did I get here? Oh yes, the damn sorcerer'.

"You might want to get cleaned up, Klaus." Gerey suggests. "Several of your guests are already awake, although we decided to let the young wizard sleep longer. He needed it, as did Mr. Rhodes it seems, although hunger woke him up a short time ago. It's probably the first restful night and good fare the man has had in ages."

Gerey notes that Terger has pulled the blanket over his head. The man scowls, steps forward, and pulls the comforter away from him. "And you have more guests." The manservant notes the look on Terger's face. "I could not deny one of The Five entry into the manor. Lady Pomander is waiting for you downstairs with a small retinue. I hope that's enough to get you moving out of that bed."

Gerey takes the blanket and sheets with him as he leaves. Terger notes that Gerey has laid out two sets of clothes for him. His normal attire and more noble fare. His garments have been cleaned and mended while he slept.

Relgar eyes open to a shadowy room and the smell of books. Light streams into the room nearby through a thin garish curtain, which bathes several of the stacks in a prism of colors. While the hues would be considered beautiful by a courtly person, there is also something mathematical to the color patterns. Likely the curtain was created to make the images that Relgar is seeing. Then his nose smells something else besides paper and ink. Food. The libraries doors are slightly ajar and he can see the shadow of a figure moving beyond it. While the person steps lightly, ceramic scrapes against metal—likely a serving tray.

There is a light rap on the door, which Relgar would not have heard if he had still been sleeping. A tiny female voice mews from the other side. "Young m-meister, there is food and drink for you here, if you wish to continue working. I am tell you that most of the others have gathered together in the lounge, although Master Klaus is still sleeping. He should be up shortly. If you wish to eat with the others, I can take this food back downstairs." The girl pauses and then adds. "Oh, I am also to tell you that L-Lady P-Pomander is here to see all of you, although it is Lord Klaus she seems most intent on seeing."

The girl stops talking and Relgar can hear her shuffling her feet. More than likely she's waiting for him to dismiss her.

* * *

Sir Tymbeck stands in the lounge waiting for the last of this adventuring group to wake. His night was restful with no visions of world goddesses or crazed sorcerers. He thinks about how he came to this world and how he was plucked from his home in Vrocia. He wonders how the young lady, Mirabelle, is doing, as well as the elves and fey he'd allied with—Evermithe, Fore, Nerisha, Ornia, and Siliarilas.

He scans the room at his new companions. He's not quite ready to call them all allies quite yet. Their goal seems just although some of them aren't the big half-ogre's idea of heroic. Yes, the dwarf named Elkgrar Ashhand is a good soul and bit of a kindrid spirit and the young guardsman named Custodio Vecchi is a devout of justice; but he's not sure what to think about the man who prefers to go by his last name, Rhodes—who is currently eating like one of Tim's kin—or the other two humans, Terger Alela and Relgar Aspergim.

All seem to have different ideas of how to handle the current crisis with an enemy that Tim hasn't encountered yet. Of course, the sorcerer made his presence known with the trap in the inn. A cowardly thing to do, which makes finding the crazed man personal. And then there was the tower with all the arcane markings; if it hadn't been for this goddess called Mirella who brought him to Kulan, he would have succumbed to the magical trap set there as well.

This Phelix person is a dastardly foe with no honor. Thinking the man's name probably won't draw the sorcerer's notice, but Tim tries not to dwell too much on his enemy. After all, Tim doesn't even know what the man looks like. 'Hmm', he wonders. 'Are there any portraits of the man. Knowing the man's visage could be helpful'.

Tim glances over at the woman seated on the divan. She wouldn't be out of place in the courts of Vrocia. Lady Samantha Pomander. One of the The Five and Terger's . . . 'commander?' What is she to him and this group known as the Dark Lanterns—a clandestine group that's not truly hidden? Yes, it's members aren't publicly known, but there seems to be some parts of it that aren't kept secret. Tim doesn't like the idea of skulking around in the dark; he'd rather face his foes head on with his blade in his hand.

Tim sighs. 'What has this world goddess dragged me into?'

"Are you feeling all right, Lord Valencia?" Lady Pomander asks.

"Am all right, Lady Pomander," Tim had tried to get her to call him Sir Tymbeck or just Tim, but she had insisted on a more formal address that excluded his knightly title. It seems 'sir' and 'dame' was meant for only for knights of Bluffside's noble families, as well as 'official' visiting dignitaries with those titles. "I'm just uncertain of how we are going to find our quarry without risking the destruction of your city."

"Bluffside has stood for a long time, Lord Valencia," Lady Pomander replies. "It will take more than one renegade sorcerer to bring down this city."

"Let us hope so," Rhodes adds while chewing his food. Lady Pomander doesn't even acknowledge his presence.

'There is something there', Tim ponders internally.

Elkgrar quickly moves to sit across from the lady and chitchats with her about other current events in the city. The serial murderer is still at large in Old City (but no new killings), as is the wife of the murdered Lord Horatio Hollinsworth. The restrictions in New City continue, but the Martial Law curfew has been lifted. Word has gone out that the militia has been activated and the streets of Old City are now guarded day and night by the Bluffside Elites. As a result, parts of the city's mines are now closed, although the adamantine continues to flow. Neither of them mention 'Waldo' or the hunt for him. Elkgrar flips through a large tome devoted to the various churches and temples of Bluffside. Custodio stands silently near the fire.

Tim continues to stand and wait. 'Terger, Relgar, get your butts down here before they start talking about courtly gossip'.

That's the current situation in the game right now. There is a a lot more going on but if I tried to summerize it all, I'd have to post so much more. All I want is for those who might be interested to have gist of what's going on and who the NPCs and PCs are right now. If none of them continue, then the game will shift elsewhere in the city with a new group of heroes tasked to figure out what the hell is going on.

Vigfus is an outcast of the main branch of the Del Cannithas. Phelix found him wandering the streets of Bluffside when Phelix first arrived in the city. Vigfus lives to kill and maim. He will attack without reason and gladly sacrifice himself for Phelix. He's a little mad; his alignment used to be Neutral Good, but he was cursed by a rakshasa. A remove curse spell would restore him back to his old self. Phelix is unaware of this curse or he would have killed Vigfus long ago.

Vigfus knows where the enclave is located in Old City. As long as he is cursed, however, he will not willingly give up this information to the PCs.

Zaman surrendered to Gralf, Pekko, and Thistle during the fight in Phelix's House. He provided a great bit of detail about Phelix's activities up unto that point in the game and was willing to tell more if it would save him from the noose. In truth, he was only a hired mercenary. He isn't a member of the Rising Swords, however.

He survived the explosion that devastated parts of New City and a kidnap/murder attempt by foes that are still unknown. He was poisoned and has been lying unconscious is a comfortable cell in The Palace since he was poisoned. The poison was magical and standard healing didn't wake him. It's almost as if he is under some sort of sleeping curse. So, while he's not dead, he cannot betray any more of Phelix's secrets until some way is found to wake him up.

Waking the man is a priority for The Five, since if Zaman sleeps too long, he might never recover. If the current PCs can find a way to wake him, he might turn out to be a useful ally. The general public doesn't know of Zaman's existence.

Abd Allah Zaman, male human Wiz4: CR 4; Size M (6 ft. tall); HD 4d4+12; hp 20; Init +4; Spd 30 ft.; AC 14; BAB/Grp +2/+3; Atk +4 melee (1d4+2/19–20/x2, +1 dagger) or +6 ranged (1d4+1/19–20/x2, 10 ft., dagger); SV Fort +4, Ref +5, Will +6; AL CN; Str 12 (+1), Dex 18 (+4), Con 16 (+3), Int 19 (+4), Wis 15 (+2), Cha 12 (+1).

Languages: Brelish, Cliff Speak, Draconic, Ignan, Midani.

Wizard Spells Known (spells/day 4/4/3): 0th – acid splash, arcane mark, dancing lights, daze, detect magic, detect poison, disrupt undead, flare, ghost sound, light, mage hand, mending, message, open/close, prestidigitation, ray of frost, read magic, resistance, touch of fatigue; 1st – detect undead, identify, magic missile (x2), mount, reduce person, shield; 2nd – darkvision, daze monster, levitate, locate object, touch of idiocy.

Possessions: +1 dagger, dagger (x2), potion of cure light wounds (x3), scholar's outfit, signal whistle, spellbook, and wand of magic missile (44 charges)

Abd Allah is a mercenary working for the Del Cannithas. He isn't very loyal to them, so if the PCs capture him, he'll tell them all he knows. However, he tends to lie first and only tells the truth if he feels his life is truly on the line. He knows the enclave exists in the city, but he doesn't know where. Phelix doesn't trust him enough. He knows that the under-cellars were used for magical experiments, but he's never been under the inn.

Ubon Metharom, Cleric of the Dark Six
Like Zaman and Vigfus, Ubon faced off against Gralf, Pekko, and Thistle in Phelix's House in New City. He survived the fight with the PCs and the explosion caused by Vigfus's flaming arrows onto the roof of the neighboring house (which had a secret fireworks shop in its basement.) He was taken into custody by the PCs and passed onto some Bluffside Regulars during the chaos that followed the explosion. However, neither he nor Zaman reached the Dungeon of Bluffside. The guards were waylaid and killed.

While Zaman was left for dead by the steam lifts of New City, Ubon completely disappeared in the chaos of the New City Disaster. It is not know whether or not he still lives (thus his stats remain active). Lord Commander Oakfirst believes that Ubon was rescued by Phelix's Loyalists and that the man is once again serving the Renegade Sorcerer. He is one of the most wanted people in Bluffside.

Ubon Metharom, male human Clr5 (Dark Six): CR 5; Size M (5 ft., 6 in. tall); HD 5d8+5; hp 30; Init +4; Spd 30 ft.; BAB/Grp +3/+7; AC 18 (+4 Dex, +4 armor) or AC 19 w/magic vestment, touch 14; Atk +8 melee (2d6+7/19–20/x2, +1 greatsword); SV Fort +5, Ref +5, Will +6; AL CE; Str 18 (+4), Dex 18 (+4), Con 12 (+1), Int 16 (+3), Wis 15 (+2), Cha 12 (+1).
Skills and Feats: Craft (alchemy) +10, Heal +7, Hide +3 (+4), Knowledge (history) +11, Knowledge (religion) +8, Knowledge (the planes) +11, Listen +2, Move Silently +3 (+4), Profession (apothecary) +10, Spellcraft +10, Spot +2; Combat Expertise, Empower Spell, Spell Focus (conjuration).
Languages: Abyssal, Brelish, Cliff Speak, Infernal.
Cleric Domains: Death, Destruction.
Cleric Spells Prepared (5/4+1/3+1/1+1): 0th – detect magic, inflict minor wounds (x2), read magic, resistance; 1st – bane, cause fear *, entropic shield, protection from good; 2nd – align weapon, shatter *, sound burst, spiritual weapon; 3rd – contagion *, magic vestment.
Possessions: +1 greatsword, belt pouch (20 gp), chain shirt, cleric vestments, potion of cure light wounds (x3), potion of protection from arrows (15/magic) (already used), and tarnished silver holy symbol.

Ubon was once a slave in Sharn, but after Phelix purchased him, he gained his freedom through his devotion to the Dark Six. Now, he lives to serve his pantheon first, Phelix second, and House Del Cannthia third. Ubon has set up a shrine in Under Old City, and one of his worshipers led the attack on the man outside the Winsome Heart. (Phelix is unaware of this fact.) Ubon hears voices, which he believes are the Dark Six telling him what to do.

Ubon has plans of his own, which includes setting all of New City on fire and blowing up important government buildings throughout the city (using gunpowder). Phelix is unaware of Ubon's plans.
