I live in the U.S., and I don't have problems with folks drinking during the game. I frequently have a drink or two while I'm DM'ing.

However, as many posters said in the other thread. I don't want to play if the folks at the table are too drunk to make sense or carry on without being disruptive. IME, playing when you're tore up drunk leads to an unsatisfactory game and the unexpected distribution of magic items.

Drinking alcohol during my games is not common, but is not actively discouraged either. It is more of a "mood thing" -- sometimes we have a drink, but usually not.

And there was one truly liquorous Paranoia session I was in...

Our group will have a drink sometimes during play, but it's usually just a bottle of hard cider or some such. I thought about making sangria for a session, but one of the players can't drink red wine. I may do it anyway. I love sangria.

There hasn't been an issue with anyone getting drunk during a game, but if there were, that would be a problem. Drunkenness wouldn't fit in well with the way we typically play. It's not an issue though. Hmm, I need to go buy more cider.

I'm in the US, in a large city. I enjoy drinking. About half my gaming group also imbibes.

I host our game at my apartment and we end up drinking during a session infrequently (I got out of the habit after gaming for a few years in the suburbs). Occasionally I'll mix a drink or sip at a Scotch or whiskey. I'm perfectly happy to share.

That said, I find the idea that some people avoid any social situation where alcoholic beverages are consumed to be strange, to say the least. How do these people go out to dinner?

Well, living in the US, and being an American are no the same thing, which I think you are aiming for. I am an American, but I have lived in Japan for over 18 years. And to be honest, it has not changed my attitudes about drinking much at all.

I just do not like it. And living in a country where you can see beer and harder liquor vending machine frequently does not help. Not hard for the JHS and such kids to get alcohol here. Yes, I know it is not hard in the states either, but harder than here.

And don't get me started on the porn vending machines.

Edit: Interesting, out of 55+ votes, thus far I am the only non-US, Problem with drinking answer. And even then, my vote is dubious as I am an American.

While I'm not opposed to the practice, this isn't something that's likely to come up in the groups I game with. (Though I have occasionally mixed alcohol and board games.)

Not to nit-pick the poll, but I feel like there should be a "It hasn't come up" or "Not opposed, but not something I'd be likely to do" answer...
