Craft skill

im trying to make a formula for the craft skill. specificly how long it will take to make an item, and the labor costs

Example 1st level expert armorsmith w 4 ranks in craft armor, skill focus craft armor, +2 stat bonus and mw tools is making a chain mail, cost 150 gp, ac +5 = dc 15

if he takes 10 he will get a skill check result of 20

the formula says that to figure out how long time a given item takes is (base cost*10)/skill check*dc in weeks.(ph65-66) so for chainmail it is (150*10)/20*15= 5 weeks.

looking in the dmg page 149 we see that a smith takes 0.4 gp a day (4 sp) if we multiply 0.4 gp with 35 days (the 5 weeks) we get a labor cost of 14 gp. 14 gp plus the cost of the raw materials is 64 gp real cost of producing a chainmail. but the cost in the phb is 150 gp.

i am not sure if wulf ratbane didn't read your post, didn't read the dmg, or is just plain surly today for some reason, but here goes.

materials are not the total cost of production. guild fees, assistants, rent, tool and toolrepair all come into play. not to mention, the guy who runs the armor shop (if it is sold thru one) has a lot of the same fees.

beyond this one has to remember protection and other like issues. plus the fact that the game obviously glosses over economics quite a bit.

this is understandable, as it is a game about "going places, killing monsters and taking their stuff" not going places, killing monsters, and balancing the sheets" :p

modify the price or come up with 18 ways to eat up the extra income before it hits is pocket :)
