    Round 1

Morvannon circles to the north, staying clear of the magic circle for now and surrounding himself in shadows. His blast of force smashes the demon squarely in the chest, leaving a painful smoking welt.

Kamotz contemplates the demon, calling to mind his studies.

    Kamotz
Demons are elemental creatures, and they come in many forms. They are changeable, able to shift what kind of elemental damage they resist (though they cannot do so very often)

    ooc: resist 10 variable 1/encounter

Vrrsk't moves toward a flanking position, belching fire, which the demon ignores. Vrrsk't raises his hand to call on the power of Apoli, forgetting until the last second the demon's inhuman reach. The hammer comes flying around, and Vrrsk't hops back in time, but his aim is spoiled.

Magnus gravitates to the bookshelf, but resists its lure for the moment. He conjures flying shards of what look like broken glass, swirling in the air around the demon, but any cuts thus produced are superficial only. Magnus gestures, and a spectral hand drags a cluster of coals from the brazier and drops them on the demon. They bounce off, harmlessly.

    Magnus
    Yep, looks like fire resistance.

ooc: This will have activated his variable resistance, which is now set to fire.

Kamotz rushes in, flail at the ready, but the demon's hammer finds him first. Reeling, his blow is feeble, and he mutters a quick prayer to mend his cracked ribs.

Vixo scurries around the outside of the circle as well, hanging back momentarily before darting in and hurling a dagger that slips between the demon's well-muscled ribs. Vixo slips closer, even as the magical dagger re-materializes in his hand.

The demon ignores the cloud of whirling daggers, taking several gashes. With a roar, it takes hold of its hammer with both hands and whirls in a great circle. Grakk and Kamotz are caught in the arc and hurled back violently with the sound of snapping bones, but Vrrsk't manages to duck in time, and Vixo is short enough that the blow passes completely overhead, not threatening him. The demon spares Vixo an ominous glance, meeting his eyes with deadly promise even as divine radiance flares around it, but the kobold merely grins back impudently. Then, before anyone can react, the demon turns and brings its hammer down in a vast overhead swing, catching Grakk squarely in the stomach. There is a sound like an overripe melon being dropped off a high shelf. Grakk vomits blood and lies twitching on the floor.

    ooc
Morvannon moves, gaining concealment. He curses the demon, and and crits for 24 damage.

    Kamotz ponders the demon.

Vrrsk't misses a lot, but maintains his mark. Using a ranged attack from E9 provokes an OA, which I'll roll for you: 13 vs. AC misses.

Magnus misses with cloud of daggers, but creates a zone of daggers in H8. He uses mage hand to pick up some embers and drop them on the demon, with no noticeable effect.

Kamotz rushes in, gets hit with an OA, and heals himself back to full after missing. He becomes marked (tent D)

Vixo circles around the bottom. He crits as well, for 14 damage.

    The demon:
Start of turn: takes 3 damage from cloud of daggers.

Standard: Circle of Pain, close burst 2. 26 vs. AC hits Grakk, 24 vs. AC hits Kamotz, nat 1 misses Vixo, 19 vs. AC misses Vrrsk't. Grakk and Kamotz take 11 damage and are pushed 1 square and knocked prone.

Minor: Smoldering gaze against Vixo: 11 vs. Will misses by 1. Demon takes 6 radiant damage from divine challenge.

AP: Pulverize on Grakk: 21 vs. AC hits for 17 damage. Grakk is at -2 and dying. Actually -3; I forgot to deduct his 1 HP for the bloodclaw weapon.

Grakk is up for a death save, followed by everyone else.

    status and initiative

    Vrrsk't 35/35 HP, 12/12 surges
    Vixo 33/33 HP, 9/9 surges

Morvannon 32/32 HP, 8/8 surges, concealment (tent)
    Magnus 29/29 HP, 8/8 surges
Demon 146/232 HP, marked by Vrrsk't with DC, cursed by Morvannon, resisting 10 fire

Grakk lies twitching on the floor within the circle, blood still oozing from his mouth. His mind fades to black as his eyes still bore into the demon. He tries to speak, but can't.

    ooc

    death saving throw: 1d20=14

    clarification on rage

Rage lasts until the end of the encounter or until a barbarian decides to use a different type of rage. So Grakk is still in a state of rage when healed to fight on, correct?

Morvannon, his eyes wide as he watches the demon lay about with its hammer, moves to keep the heavily armored dragonborn between himself and the monster, then sends another bolt of energy streaking towards it. "If this is Zal'ekthees's work, I'm impressed! Or possibly appalled!"

    Actions
Move: Move to C-11, maintaining Shadow Walk
Standard: Cast Eldritch Blast against the demon, hitting Reflex 21 for 16 damage.

I know I didn't hit "Submit" twice, so I don't know why it posted twice. Silly, silly ENWorld.

Vrrsk't curses himself for leaving the big demon an opportunity to swing at him. Stepping into range, his armor begins to glow with a dull light and Vrrsk't seems to be invigorated by this. His flail begins to whip through the air at higher and higher speed as he twirls it by his side. The draconic bones begin to glow with the holy light of Apoli as Vrrsk't brings his ancestral weapon into high-speed contact with demonflesh. The demon seems unfazed by this contact as the holy energy flows past it and into Grakk. The Barbarian begins to stir...

    actions

    move: shift to F8
Minor: Activate Stoneborn Armor for 12 temp HP
    Standard: Paladin's Judgment
...1d20+7=16, Miss. Grakk can spend 1 Healing Surge.

Light begins to channel through Grakk's mind and then he awakens. His vision is blurred at first, but then clears. Soon he zeros in on the demon. Although blood still drips from his mouth and nose and his stomach in severe pain, Grakk's rage still boils within him. Strength starts to flow back through his limbs. He takes a deep breath, looks up and says: "You haven't seen the last of my blade demon...I can promise you that!."

Grakk should have 8 hitpoints. When you're healed while dying, "you go to 0 hit points and then regain hit points from the healing effect." (PH, p. 295)

Vixo, emboldened by the demon's seeming inability to hit him, darts in to engage up close. His first strike misses wildly, but he doesn't give up. His next attack catches the demon in a vital spot, leaving it distracted.
