    Thank you for posting this. This is really, really good stuff, and I am glad that your players are very much enjoying it. I have to agree with firesnakeries; there seems to be no grind in your game. (FWIW, I would say grind is not related to the length of combat, so much as the length of uninteresting combat, and your players seemed nailed to their seats.....in a good way! )

    Comment: They're not going mad with the Action Points and Daily Powers this time- perhaps they're trying to fathom out other ways to overcome the bad guys without relying on the big guns. I had Agrid continue to yell despicable things throughout the encounter, and Kalarel's Apparition make veiled threats about the 'Shadows that will swallow the Nentir Vale', which was mostly met with shrugs by the players. Plenty of acting up on my part, that and a voice that scoured my throat for Kalarel.

    Comment: Concentrating fire and rolling well, all the lesser bad guys are more or less gone, it's a tactical victory with the players seemingly getting how to deal with encounters in which the dangerous bad guys hang back- it helps that I've not rolled much above a '10'. In game Kalarel's Apparition is getting more and more desperate, screaming at Agrid to 'destroy the meddling fools.'

    Is the apparition standard or your creation, i remember facing off against a halfling slinger in this fight.
    Definately looks like the players have the upper hand here, will this get them to 2nd level?
    Looking forward to hearing how the players react to Agrids 'sod this for a laugh' special move.

    This is the free download version of KOTS, there are a few changes here and there, including Kalarel the Apparition, it's obviously available free at Wizards. I have played through it previously with the Halfling Slinger, he once got away from the PCs and became a short-lived recurring villain, he travelled under the name of "Jersey Turnpike" as I remember.

    As to XP the PCs have been in four encounters so far and have 585 XP each, or thereabouts, Phrenic has 500 XP I started him with a little less so that the PCs would have to work a little harder to ensure all PCs have enough XP to level up.

    Right then, now Round #3-

    Grey- Magic Missile Agrid; Hit 12 Force damage (22 HP). The Gnome Fades Away- Invisible. Grey Moves back.

    The players look from one to another and then back at me, I've just picked the mini off the map... Dave, who plays the surly Dwarf- Dirty, puts a cross on my nice clean map tile with a magic marker pen in the spot Agrid formerly inhabited- later I discover that it will not come off.

    Comment: The two bad guys left are trying their best to stay ahead of the PCs, which is only prolonging the agony- play this one again and I think the blaze of glory method is probably the way to go, that way we can get on with the story.

    A chance but unlikely, he has to survive 3 or 4 attacks before he can act.
    Surrender would probably be his best option as he should be able to escape easily later.
    But i dont think he would get the chance.
    Tell me, in your situation... What would Starscream do?

    Comment: An easy fight, the PCs barely broke sweat, and who's this hidden in a pile of blankets and hog-tied- it's Douven Staul, and with a tale to tell- Agrid, the Gnome, and his friends were working for someone call Kalarel, the Apparition appeared nightly to relay the Gnome's orders. Which leaves the PCs wondering who Kalarel is- they don't have to look far for an answer. Phrenic explains that he was sent to Winterhaven in search of Kalarel, purportedly the leader of some Death Cult. The PCs like the sound of that- not the Death Cult, the destruction of Kalarel and the Death Cult that is.

    Stats: Slightly more restrained (that's not a joke) than the last Action Point/Daily Power free-for-all, the PCs were indeed trying to get through the fight without using up all of their one-shot abilities. The damage quotient is back to normal, the PCs inflicting 33.43 hit points damage/turn, against the bad guys on 10.14. It helps that the PCs connected much more frequently- 72.75% (24 from 33) of the time versus the bad guys on 52.94% (9 from 17), nearly 20% better.

    Once again the first turn of the encounter for the PCs was the most productive, they hit for a total of 94 points of damage, the bad guys replied with 27 points of damage- also their best turn.

    Grey leads the way this time- hitting with 90.91% of his attacks (10 from 11 attempts), Dirty coming in a close second with 85.71% (6 from 7 attempts).

    We're still moving at a reasonable pace, on average 7 minutes/turn of play, it helped the minis were all (except the hidden Guard Drakes) set up and ready to play when the combat started up. This encounter took a little while longer perhaps because of Kalarel's insubstantial nature, the fairly high HP Guard Drakes (48 HP each), and Agrid remaining for much of the encounter as far away as possible from the PCs, and still in range with his crossbow.

    Combined Stats: Winstanley is losing his edge, the Striker Rogue has inflicted 326 hit points damage in total so far, Grey is catching up with 323. Winstanley still has the accuracy 83.33% connect rate, as opposed to Grey with 67.31%; however the Wizard is making more attacks- 52 (35 hits) against Winstanley's 30 attacks (25 hits).

    Two Level 1 Encounters and two Level 2s- the Level 1 Encounters averaging 31.5 minutes to play out, while the Level 2 Encounters averaging 46.5 minutes. Obvious I know but were probably going to see a stepped set of results here, Level (+0) = X minutes, Level +1 = X + N minutes, Level +2 = X + 2N; that kind of thing.
