What music you use will depend upon the kind of mood you want to set.

The suggestions made so far are excellent, up to a point, and to them, I would add Peter Gabriel's [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTAaKAVpOOM"]The Last Temptation of Christ [/ame]soundtrack.

If you want something more contemporary, or to change things up by region, culture, or situation, I'd investigate music by:

Drone bands like
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrclNyck6HY"]Earth[/ame]
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vS53zy-DPF8"]Sunn O[/ame]

Progressive musicians like
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8calsRhaYzA"]Robert Fripp[/ame]
Brian Eno (esp. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9kPIp4MtX0"]Music for Airports[/ame], [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjP5iWtnsUA"]Music for Films[/ame] series), but[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMXaE9NtQgg&feature=related"] other stuff too.[/ame]

New Age musicians like
Vangelis (esp. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32UODtg41zc&feature=related"]Soil Festivities[/ame])
Phillip Glass (esp. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFnmH9a2RkE&feature=related"]Koyaanisqatsi[/ame])
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxPTjPzTVdM&p=F18499E8C8FA5540&playnext=1&index=16"]Tangerine Dream[/ame]

"World-beat" musicans like:
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPdOmY1BjAU&p=225FEE45CB107FE7&playnext=1&index=1"]Kodo[/ame]
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxNhcTKJIGs"]Rabih Abou-Khalil[/ame]

Avante-Garde groups/composers like:

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpL7YqtD28o&feature=related"]Kronos Quartet[/ame]
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdLhRB4dJJI"]Glenn Branca[/ame]

I'm a compulsive prepper when it comes to D&D. I'm about two or three months away from unleashing Athas on my players, and I'd like to assemble a thematically appropriate ambient music playlist for Dark Sun.

I've been doing the same thing for the last six months or so. I've compiled a pretty solid selection of ambient music, combat music, and scary music for my Dark Sun playlists.

Here's some of the soundtracks I've been pulling pieces from. I dig them all; maybe you'll like some of them too.

Loreena McKennitt, the tracks "Kecharitomene" and "Sacred Shabbat" from her album An Ancient Muse.

Children of the Nile
Conan the Barbarian
Conan the Destroyer
Clash of the Titans (2010)
Dark Crystal
Dragonslayer
Dungeons & Dragons
Elder Scrolls: Morrowind
Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
Eragon
Kingdom of Heaven
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World
Merlin
The Mummy
The Mummy Returns
Passion of the Christ
The Road Warrior
The Scorpion King

I still have the following scores to go through, and I think there are tracks in there I'll be able to mine:

Black Death
Centurion
Prince of Persia
Robin Hood (2010)
The Last Airbender
Lost (seasons 1-5)

Just saw Centurion last night. AWESOME! And the music was great as I recall.

I am a soldier of Rome! I will not yield!

Where did you see it? I wasn't sure I'd be able to see it here in the States. Guess I better poke around and see if I can find it. I love the score; hope I can see the film either on screen or on the DVD.

Adaptation and Survival by Tribes of Neurot

It's basically "music" made up from sounds recorded of insects.

Creepy, alien and dangerous tone.

The 13th Warrior!!

and yes Centurion is damn good, brutal as heck, too.
Even the Romans knew to leave us haggis bashers in peace ;)

Soundracks to the three God of War series of games. Similar in style to 300. Just remember to trim out a couple of tracks with talking interspersed in them from the first one.
