Alarion 11
Raul 6
Brae 6
Undead

Tau takes the briefest of moments to reposition the illumination in the area before beginning another spell. Suddenly bright green acid springs from his hand and flies over to the human zombie, striking it in the chest. Tau makes another motion and the acid flares again briefly, damaging the zombie even more.

SoulFetter sees his arrows punch ineffectively into the undead flesh, and decides to take a different approach. He rushes forward shouldering the Constables in his way aside, drawing his great axe as he moves, and whips the heavy blade around in a whistling arc and felling the melting zombie like a sapling. The chunks of once human flesh freeze as they fall.

Alarion moves up behind Soulfetter, ready to cover Raul should the monk choose to retreat.

Raul maintains his center and scarcely moves as the zombies tear at his flesh. With the healing hand on his shoulder and the sound of his friend Alarion at his back, Raul stands fast and attacks the old goblin woman zombie with his flurry of blows attack. The blows batter the zombie sending out gouts of disgusting gases from beneath the flesh before she topples backward to sprawl in the snow unmoving.

Brae moves up close behind Raul, chanting the words of a prayer. He reaches out and touches his companion, sending healing energies into the monk's body.

A final form shambles into the light. This creature is not like the others. It moves with a shambling gate as well, but with more speed and purpose than the zombies. This corpse is encased in ice a rictus of pain and anger frozen onto the once living man’s features. Tau’s lights glimmer off the ice and it is easy to see how it might be mistaken for armor. The man is dressed in the simple clothes of a tradesman or carter. One of his legs is twisted as if crushed and broken, but he manages to walk on it in his present state. The darkness in the eyes is most disturbing a blackness that is not merely shadow or color, but the absence of light life and energy, pure void. Indeed you feel the very heat of your bodies, the life essence pulled toward those eyes. It moves forward hungrily thirsting for your living heat. It focuses its gaze on Brae as it moves forward. (Soulfetter, Raul, Alarion and Brae each take 10 points of cold damage, DC17 Fort save for half) In a voice like an icy wind the creature speaks. "Priest, you would not help me. Now you must keep me warm." The hatred and malevolence in those words grips Brae's heart like a frozen hand.

OOC: Nice teamwork on that last round. Actions?

Tau sees the creature and realizes that this must be what they have been searching for. Just as thought, it is going after the religious figure in the group. With a mere moment of consideration, Tau leaves his concealment and moves up behind Brae, drawing a rod as he goes. Once there he uses the rod in the casting of another spell. Suddenly the area around the creature appears wet and slick.

OOC: Tau casts a Sculpted Grease spell. It covers the area from R-7 to U-9. The creature will have to make a Reflex saving throw (DC 16), or fall prone. He must make a DC 10 balance check in order to move at half speed. He makes another saving throw on all of my turns.

OOC: Also Tau tries to determine what kind of creature it is as well as any other information he can gleam about it.

Brae is taken aback by the icy hatred in the creature's eyes and the unnatural cold that freezes his flesh, but he quickly shakes off the feeling. His companions stood at his side, and his faith surrounded him like a steel curtain. "Repent of your sins, and surrender yourself, and I promise that you shall have my aid," calls Brae, responding to the new undead's accusation. Deep down inside, he knows the thing will not listen to reason, and he calls upon the blessings of Meda. The cleric once again touches Raul's shoulder, and this time a bull's strength flows into the monk.

AC21, HP: 48/58

Cast Bull's Strength on Raul, providing him with +4 STR for 7 minutes.

Seeing Tau's clever stratagem, Alarion raises his deep voice in a call of challenge to the undead monster. "You will kill no more, spirit! Surrender, lest you be ignominiously trounced!" He holds his shield ready to protect Raul if need be.

Raul hesitates as the cold permeates his body. As the snow changes in front of him from Tau's spell, Raul judges his chances at cleanly closing on the enemy. Realizing he is between the creature and his intended target and that his comrades are chosing to stand as a group instead of advancing, Raul readies his attack and waits for the fight to come to him.

OOC: Raul STR is now 14; Raul will use Combat Expertise: -1 atk, +1 dodge AC, giving Raul DR2/-. Raul will take a 5 ft step as part of his readied action, so if the creature moves to the R column, Raul will close the 5 ft and attack with his flurry of blows.

The creature continues forward toward the party. As it reaches the grease the first light of the sun come into the alley and strikes the strange undead. It vanishes into frosty motes that quickly fade in the heat of the sun. The unnatural cold fades back to the normal winter chill of Lauralie Summerhome and you begin to be aware of the ordinary sounds of morning in the city outside the alley. There is no sign of the malevolent undead though the corpses so recently animated zombies remain.

"What in Meda's name just happened?" If it weren't for the corpses upon the cold ground, Brae would almost have thought he had imagined the whole encounter. He tries to recall whether he has ever heard anything about this type of undead creature before.

Knowledge (Religion)...can be an Aid Another to Tau's check, bringing his total to a 34.

Tau and Brae confer briefly and come to the conclusion that this undead must be some sort of variation of the Bleakborn. A creature known for a great hatred for living things and the power to draw the living warmth from its foes. Such a thing is very rare and it is believed that Orcus himself may have had a hand in the creation of the original Bleakborn. It is said that the warmth they draw makes them stronger for a time or heals them of wounds.

As the other confer on the undead threat, Raul will search the victim for any sign of identification.
