[Arcane Row - Venza]The Mystic Pearl

Living PF Judge

First Post
One of the mysteries of E’n is the phenomenon known as Arcane Row. Whether it is a manifestation of the Other World with multiple entrances, a relic of some ancient culture or some other abstruse or unknown explanation one thing is true: Arcane Row appears in some fashion in nearly every major community on E’n.

Arcane Row is filled with an ever-changing array of shops and seemingly mad hawkers selling items exotic and magical, bizarre creatures, and strange apparati. The Row looks different in every city it appears in; in Venza, Arcane Row is approached either through the narrow Meraviglia Street lit by golden glasslights, or Glimmerweed Canal. Shoppers approaching from the canal are greeted by a two foot tall sandstone statue covered in flaking gold leaf and sporting a broad grin of razor sharp teeth. The landing opens up onto a courtyard floored with smooth paving stones and with an elaborately carved well-head in the center. A bewildering array of shops and stands are crammed cheek by jowl along every wall and in the courtyard.

While shops and hawkers fill every side of the Row the main attraction and seemingly the only constant in every manifestation of Arcane Row is:

The Mystic Pearl

Emporium of the Magical and Bizarre

A tiny storefront demarks the entrance to this store, unassumingly decorated with a collection of dusty oddities in a window of thick paneled glass. Great mottled eggs, a stuffed bird of brilliant hue, a rusty cauldron, and a massive snakeskin are among the bizarre items on display. To those in the know however all that is important is the mark upon the door, that of a golden lamp proclaiming this as a gateway to the premiere magic store on E'n...

Stepping inside you find yourself in a far large space than expected, infact you can see no end to the rows and rows of shelves all lined with fascinating, but seemingly useless items. Straight ahead you see an oval counter behind which an obese fellow possessed of a long lusterous black moustache - as if to make up for the lack of hair on his head - stands smiling in welcome. Almar Ben Shawari, Proprieter a brass plaque announces.

"Ah my friend! Welcome to the Mystic Pearl! How can I serve you this day? Please, look over my manifest and see which of my wonders might tickle your fancy and unburden your purse!"

The proprietor exclaims warmly, placing a series of beautifully illuminated lists before you proclaiming his wares.

Once you have decided upon what you want Almar Ben Shawari smiles hugely,

"Ah an excellent choice! I can see I deal with a person with an eye for quality! Let me see that will be..." He scrawls down the items you have selected on a small slateboard with each's price listed and a total below and shows it to you. Once you have paid, stroking his moustaches with satisfaction, he produces a small golden bell and calls, "Saleem bring out the order!"

Some minutes pass before a small swarthy boy wearing a mutinous expression appears from amidst the maze of shelving with your items in hand, or particularly heavy or bulky items floating on a translucent disk behind him.

"There you are, enjoy, enjoy. And please always remember the Pearl's money back guarantee - we guarantee we won't give you your money back! Please come again!"

Purchasing Items not listed above
There is a 75% chance that items below a community’s base value will be able to be found and purchased (rolls of 76-100 indicate failure to find an item). If you are seeking multiple items of the same type you must roll for each in turn, the first failure means there are no more in stock. Items above that must be in the Mystic Pearl’s inventory or may be commissioned, see below. Base Values of communities that currently have access to Arcane Row are listed below.
Venza: 16,000 gp
Martna: 4,000 gp
Tritower: 2,000 gp
[sblock=Diminishing odds]Items above the community's base value still have a chance of being stocked. This chance falls 5% for every 1,000 gp of value over the community's base. So, there is a 70% chance to find something of 17,000 gp value in Venza on down to 5% chance of finding something valued at 30,000 gp.[/sblock]

Commissioning Items
Items commissioned by a character have a special waiting time before they can be used in Living Pathfinder. The waiting time is triple the length of time required to craft the item. For example, if a +2 Cloak of Resistance was commissioned the player would need to wait 12 real life days before it would be usable in game, since it costs 4,000gp and each 1,000gp requires a day of crafting, assuming the character is able to reach a magic shop. This would mean an expensive item could take months to come, though in game it would likely still arrive faster than its craft time. To speed that process, a player can spend 1 DMC to bypass 60 real life days in the commissioning of an item. Commissioned items must be paid for in advance.

How to Use Arcane Row and the Mystic Pearl
Characters can only visit Arcane Row, commission an item, or pick up an item between adventures - barring DM permission. The player posts in this thread stating he buys an item from the inventory and deducts the cost from his gold total. If attempting to buy a magical item below the base value and not in the Pearl’s inventory (items above base value are not available unless in the inventory lists or by commission) the player will need to add the roll to his post. Please use ENWorld’s dice roller. If successful, deduct the cost from your characters gold total. With commissioned items post when the item is commissioned and also when the time has passed and the character picks up the item.

Magic, masterwork and other unusual items can also be sold for full value here. When selling an item, post what it is and its cost. Add that cost to your character’s wealth total. If there is an error a judge will contact you to get it corrected.

Note: Mundane equipment [pp. 142-143 Core (weapons), pg.151 Core (armor), pp. 158-159 Core (goods and services), pg.177 APG (weapons), pg.180 APG (armor), pg.182 APG (goods and services)] and masterwork versions of the above are available at all times. Items made of special materials and poisons (pg. 559 Core) are subject to the 75% rule.

A judge will update the inventory when necessary.

A small gnomish woman is walking down a darkened alley only to turn a corner and find a closed slightly rusting steel gate within a broad stone arch before her. She was told by some merchants of Venza that the items she sought might be found this way. So with a shrug she unlatched the gate and moved through... with a brief feeling of disorientation she looks up to find she is elsewhere... A street of many different races all hocking some item or another.

She proceeds along looking and politely declining offers of many items from the seemingly mundane to rather exotic. She approaches a shop, The Mystic Pearl, and enters... She starts to look about for some new armors.

Fury walks the narrow Meraviglia Street dimly lit by golden glasslights held in delicate brasswork sconces. Someone must be doing well if they can light this alley with glasslights. He continues on, the swagger in his step growing less pronounced as he approaches the hub-bub of Arcane Row. He pushes through a gate and into chaos. Shopping at its finest! Fury grins and begins his explorations at a stall pushing what he thinks is fur cloaks until one takes a nip at his hand.

Quickly moving on he sees a woman of unearthly beauty arranging tiny bottles upon a velvet display...

Fury is looking for...
Potions of Cure Light Wounds (x2) -- not found
MW rapier (320 gp)

Though he doesn't find the healing magic he hoped for Fury is well-pleased with the fine but plainly crafted rapier that he finally found after what seemed hours of rooting through substandard weapons. Finished for the moment he makes his way out of Arcane Row and back to the Dunn Wright Inn.

Na Bith Mo Riocht Tá!
Pari and his great cat, his best friend Tagaiwi, stalk the crowded venues of Meraviglia street. As they walk, the little Gnome keeps up a steady whisper in Tagaiwi's ear - a long standing habit developed to keep the Tiger calm. "It's here somewhere, Tagaiwi. I know it is. Fury wouldn't steer us wrong. The Mystic Pearl, that was the name . . . Ah-ha! I knew he'd told us true!"

He steps through the gate to find a cozy little boutique, all sorts of items artfully arranged at just the right height for a Gnome to peruse them comfortably. His burnt orange eyes light in delight as he meanders through the displays. Each time a particularly fine piece catches his eye he exclaims excitedly. He roams the displays for almost an hour before a glint of green reveals itself from within a rack of clothing. He burrows in and pulls out an oddly crafted suit of armor. "Look, Tagaiwi! Just the thing for a pair of tree huggers like ourselves!"

On his way up to pay, Pari stops at a prominent display set just in front of the counter. On impulse, he indulges his Gnomish fascination with gadgets and grabs up a finely made backpack with lots of hooks, latches and straps. Once at the counter, however, he finds that he has the cash only for the armor. Looking mightily embarrassed, he returns the backpack to its display.

OOC: Waiting for approval of Adventurer's Armory before purchase of +1 Leaf Armor.

After arriving back in town, Syl quickly heads to the now famous magic shop. He looks in amazement at all the trinkets that were clearly out of his price range. He was headed for one department in particular--magical scrolls. Upon finding that section, he began reviewing them, looking for several in particular.

Syl is looking for scrolls of Beguiling Gift, Command, Comprehend Languages, Enlarge Person, Hypnotism, Ill Omen, Obscuring Mist, and Ray of Enfeeblement.

Borric walks into the shop and starts looking around for some good quality gear, "Oy, shopkeep! I want to see a fine crafted breastplate and some of your best crafted weapons." He takes a look to see if they have some of the items he is interested in.

He arranges the purchase of the masterwork breatplate and masterwork guisarme (Total cost for both, 659gp). He sells his old armor and some of his weapons while purchasing some regular quality ones as well.

After being disappointed about the selection, he commissions a masterwork flail, intending to trade for it later. (Commissioned 10 Jan 2011)

Korey walks into the Pearl and quickly finds the weapon racks. Doubting he'll find what he's looking for, he begins examining the axes.

Ah, this War Axe is of dwarf make. Korey picks it up and starts examining the blade and balance.

"Yes, Yes! This'll do nicely!"

Korey stingily counts out 330 gp and purchases a new MW Dwarven War Axe.

Fester enters the mystic pearl under cover of darkness. His meager coin purse leads him to the stall that sells thrown weapons. Fester is certainly one who would prefer to attack his enemies from a distance. He examines the slings, but finds nothing that captures his fancy. Then he notices the darts.
