You press on down the tunnel. Bob seems relieved to be in motion again.

The passage slopes up gradually, never turning, until the last patches of water on the floor are gone. Then it suddenly ends at a T-junction - or, more precisely, runs into a perpendicular passage which is much rougher, with more twists and turns and an uneven floor. It is still a worked tunnel, though, as it is braced by wooden beams. A few yards down the cooridor to the left is a niche with no floor and a metal ladder bolted to the rear wall. At the bottom of the ladder you can see another passage paralleling this one, its floor lined by cart tracks.

You decide to pause at the intersection for a time while Lilli scouts a short distance down each passage. She soon returns, reporting that each of them soon branch off into galleries and side passages which slope steeply away. Meanwhlie, Gil has been examining the ladder, and he realizes that each time he moves away and then looks down the shaft again, the tunnel at the bottom has changed slightly. At first it ran in the exact same direction as the cross-arm of the T, but each time he looked back it had changed by a few imperceptible degrees. Now it already veers off at an angle.

You are back in the shifting maze.

[sblock=Skill Challenge]
Ok, back to the skill challenge. Final round! The rules are here, with an addendum here.

A reminder that, as this is final round, you can now use the Go For Broke action - your rolls are at -5, but if you succeed, you gain an extra success. (The linked rules post says that you must decide this as a group, but I'll loosen that up a bit: you can each decide individually whether you want to Go For Broke.)

The DC for contributing skill checks is 19, and the DC for Aid Another is 10. You have 3 successes total, and need 8 for total victory or 6 for partial victory.

For this round the skills you can use are:

Arcana (primary skill)
Athletics
Dungeoneering (primary skill)
Nature
Perception
Stealth

Primary skills get +2. Reusing the same skill gets a -2 for each use after the first. You can use skills that aren't on the above list, but you need to check with me first to convince me that it makes sense.

You've already used Dungeoneering, Bluff, Stealth, and History. If you don't want to take the penalty for reusing skills, it's not too late to go back and explore the umber hulk tunnel, which will have a different set of challenges.

OOC: That was... a not so good moment for a 2

Determined to clear the path to the exit once and for all, Shale concentrates on the arcane energies swirling in the maze. At first, the light in him shines and seems to make the path more familiar, les uncanny and weird, but soon the crystals in him dim and become dull, his energies spent. Perhaps he shouldn't have helped make so many healing potions?

Wait, don't strain by yourself! We can pull together, all of us, and use our combined power to find the exit. Gil looks around at the arcanists, hoping they would agree.

Shale latches on to lines of magic flowing through the walls. The power follows the spent veins of silver that once threaded through the earth here. It spirals tighter and tighter through the maze, converging on a central point. Shale can tell that the group is being tugged closer and closer to the center of the magic, where a great, malevolent intelligence lurks. His psychic senses touch its mind: rage, beating against the chains that hold it below ground. Venomous hatred aimed at a disciple who has betrayed it. And awareness of a tiny, insectile mind which is trying to penetrate its defenses...

Suddenly a great backlash of magical force strikes Shale, overloading his sight with red and his hearing with a hollow roaring. When his mundane senses clear, he finds himself leaning heavily against a wall, digging his fingers in for support. But his magical sense remains burnt out - he cannot feel the lines of magic at all any more. He tries to open his mind, and a flood of pain causes him to instinctively snap his senses shut.

[sblock=OOC]No permanent effects, this is just flavour. Your magical/psychic sense will return gradually before the next encounter.

Remember, going for broke is -5, so you actually rolled a 10. (Not that it matters as the 15 missed too.)

Shale! shouts Gil, rushing forward to the creature, Hold on! The wizard uses his arcane knowledge to shield Shale. Feeling out the source of Shale's pain, Gil shares his state with it, the nausea being strong enough to drown out most other sensation.

Gil extends the protection to Bob, and the other members of the group. Holding the magical barrier against the vile being with all his remaining focus. Don't let it overwhelm you, focus. Picture something dear to you, that you would fight for, and concentrate on that. No anger, only focus.

OOC: Gil auto-assists Shale for next arcana check. (Gil is +11)

[sblock=ooc][MENTION=82643]CaBaNa[/MENTION]: It's too late to assist Shale. You have to do it before his action. He can spend an action point to reroll, but it's part of the same action. You could assist the next character to try an Arcana check, though - your +2 from Aid Another would cancel the -2 from Shale having used Arcana already.[/sblock]

OOC: Didn't remember that, thanks. I think I'll use the chance.

"Actually we can't feel emotions. And that makes us very sad."

"That was a joke"

"Anyway, I felt something. There's something outright bad down there, pulling us to it. It nearly blew me out like a candle. But it's revealed itself, and now I can feel much more easily where it is, so I can guide us in the opposite direction.

OOC: So that was a going for broke attempt by Shale, correct? That puts us up to five successes and three people left. Did Shale use Gil's aid another or is that available to Lilli?
