Watching the interplay Brendan will sit down his tea cup and say "Gentlemen, mylady, there is something else behind the reactions of the common folk, something more than a few books, someone or something has stoked their feelings against the professor and his kin, they will wait and they will strike as soon as they see the lady deserted"

Dannis turns to Brendan. "You may be right, but why then would the professor simply ask us to stay on for a month?" The cleric scratches at his beard. "There certainly seems to be something going on, and it would seem clear that the professor thinks that whatever the danger is that it will come soon."

Besharrn just thought this was going to be a Funeral Detail and a Will Reading! The developing mystery surrounding these events and the strong hint of grave danger [no pun intended, you believe me don't you?] sparks his interest even as it tightens his sphincter. The dour Half-Orc remains silent and attentive.

"I recall the professor being a most excellent chess player" Brendan says "It makes sense if you consider he has perhaps had more knowledge about his enemies movements/motives than they knew he knew. He has simple staged it so that they will want to react quickly, and thus hastily to recover the items while he has moved us a pawns in supporting position to his queen, the lady kendra" pausing briefly he then adds "they know nothing about us and will consider us to be pawns as was the professors intent I belive, thus they will move to attack focused on the Lady Kendra and overlooking a much deadlier threat..us"

"Well, gentlemen, m'lady . . . we could sit and speculate all day about the Professor's motives and what he knew or didn't know. Or we could take a look at these tomes he's entrusted to our temporary care, and possibly find more clues as to his true intentions.

"As to your safety and reputation, Lady Kendra, if you're comfortable with this motley group of runabouts staying here unescorted then I'll not argue with you . . . I'll remain your guest so long as I'm needed and welcome."

Dannis finds himself nodding, and twirls the key in his hand. "Indeed. We should see what is in this trunk of books...perhaps we will find a clue there. Lady Kendra, if you would so kind as to show us the way?"

"The trunk is not overlarge, but fairly heavy I think we should bring it here to the den. It is under father's bed." Securing the assistance of a couple of the more muscular among you the box is soon resting on an ottoman in your midst. While you bring out the box she brings out a couple of glowing magical orbs from her father's room to provide adequate light to properly examine the tomes as evening has fallen. She pulls the drapes and asks one you to put a fresh log on the fire. She offers refills to any who desire it.

The chest itself is a relatively small but heavy object of oak and iron. Obviously it is solidly made. A careful examination reveals no obvious traps, hidden compartments or signs of tampering. Kendra, perhaps nervous about the contents, offers the key to you to give the honor of opening the chest. The key from the will fits the lock perfectly, and within are several old tomes and one relatively new one. The newest tome sits on the top and bears the phrase “Read me now!” scratched into the leather cover.

Dannis picks up the book with "Read Me Now" scratched upon it. Before reading it, he holds it up for Kendra to see. "Is this your father's writing?"

"Besharrn, after we move this box, let us walk the grounds once as the final prepartions are made. We do not know the area, so if spies or attackers are outside, we would never know."
