Scotley's Carrion Crown IC Part 1 The Haunting of Harrowstone

Scotley

Hero
While Falco, Vadim and Kendra hit the books the rest of you step out into the morning sun. The rain of yesterday is gone and the sky is clear. Kendra recommends that you visit Jorfa, the old female dwarf smith at the Ravengro Forge on the town square. You remember passing it on the way to the and from the funeral yesterday. However, you notice that something is going on in the opposite direction. Down by the river at the Harrowstone Memorial a small crowd has gathered and there is a buzz of conversation.

Other than the looming ruins of Harrowstone on a nearby hill, Ravengro’s most distinctive landmark is a 25-foot-tall, moss-covered stone statue that overlooks the river. The statue depicts a proud, muscular human man dressed in leathers and wielding a truncheon—a depiction of Warden Hawkran. A total of 25 names—the guards who died in the fire of 4661, as well as the warden’s wife, Vesorianna—are chiseled into the statue’s stone base.

The memorial is a popular meeting spot for late-night trysts among Ravengro’s young lovers, for it has just the right mix of tragic romance and spooky ambiance without actually being on Harrowstone’s supposedly haunted grounds.

OOC: The forge, the Lorrimor house and the memorial are all marked on the map, but you may have to download it and open it with something you can use to blow it up to see these things.

"Perhaps we should see what the commotion at the memorial is all about," says Dannis, pointing toward the crowd.

Vadim follows Lady Kendra to the library. As he and his new friend walk the halls of Lorrimor estate, he fills Falco in on what he knows already of the prison for which the town is (somewhat) famous, and of the cult which the Professor made his life's study. Once the little group arrives at the library, he quickly becomes engrossed in his greatest passion - the study of other cultures, other beliefs and ways of life. The teacher in him comes out, and as he makes his way through the books, meticulously cross-referencing and making notes, he expounds and exclaims on what he finds, drawing Falco and Kendra into the world he's exploring as much as they'll allow it.

[sblock=OOC]Knowledge (Local) (1d20+7=16)
Knowledge (Religion) (1d20+7=8)
(These are his no research, just what he knows before delving into the library, one time per adventure roll and is meant to represent what he talks about on the way to the library. The first is for Harrowstone, the second for the Whispering Way)

Knowledge (Research - Harrowstone, The Whispering Way) (1d20+7=17, 1d20+7=10)
(And these are his checks aided by the Professor's library. If Falco's a really good research assistant we might actually find out some good stuff on Harrowstone, but it looks like Vadim's efforts aren't turning up much more than he already knew).[/sblock]

Dannis, Brendan, B'rii and Besharrn make their way down to the riverside to find what is obviously a local authority figure and one of his deputies examining the Harrowstone monument. Half a dozen townsfolk stand about discussing the matter in hushed tones. A large letter "V" has been crudely drawn on the base of the monument in what appears to be blood. More blood has been splashed on the monument. In all there is only a small amount of blood, but the effect has obviously upset the townsfolk.

The Sheriff catches sight of you and strides over. He is clearly a no-nonsense fellow and fixes you with a hard stare. "Names Sheriff Benjen Caeller and I keep the peace here in Ravengro. You folk are new in town. Just where were you lot late last night?" There is a murmur of approval from the crowd.

Vadim recounts the following information about Harrowstone with a little help on the details provided by Kendra.

Harrowstone is a ruined prison—partially destroyed by a fire in 4661, the building hasstood vacant ever since. The locals suspect that it’shaunted, and don’t enjoy speaking of the place.

Harrowstone was built in 4594. Ravengro was founded at the same time as a place where guards and their families could live and that would produce food and other supplies used by the prison. The fire that killed all of the prisoners and most of the guards destroyed a large portion of the prison’s underground eastern wing, but left most of the stone structure above relatively intact.

The prison’s warden perished in the fire, along with his wife, although no one knows why she was in the prison when the fire occurred. A statue commemorating the warden and the guards who lost their lives was built in the months after the tragedy—that statue still stands on the riverbank just outside of town.

As for the Whispering Way, he can add nothing to what they learned from the Professor's Journal.

OOC: I'll wait for Falco's rolls before addressing the research.

"We stayed at the Lorrimor house, Sheriff. This is certainly not are work. If you would allow, though, perhaps we can aid you in determining who is responsible for this."

"Brendan, be respectful. We are visitors here. It is wrong to desecrate a monument to the hallowed dead. Sheriff, I see you have plenty of help. But if you want extra backup, we will help you round up whoever did this. You just lead the way" B'rii respectfully addresses the sheriff. "Is that blood, Sheriff? Have you determined what kind of blood it is?"
