As you enter the tavern you are immediately set upon by a small group of hideously fanged and hairy giant spiders that drop from above.

Following this unexpected assault you are greeted by hearty laughter from behind the bar. As your eyes adjust to the lower light indoors the strings from which the fake spiders dangle become obvious. Zokar Elkarid, who you met at the funeral is the laughing barkeep. His son, who was also there, pulls a cord that returns the spiders to the ceiling high above.

Only a couple of patrons are here at midmorning. This is a modest village where most folk have to work hard just to get by. Between the breakfast and lunch crowd only a couple old fellows play chess in a corner while nursing mugs of ale. Of course adventurers always have time for a pint.

"Welcome to the Laughing Demon my friends. Can I pull you a pint of Demon's Ichor or perhaps a Liquid Ghost? I'll have some of our famous Corpse Chowder ready in a bit if you are hungry." Zokar explains his unusual board of fare. He holds the philosophy that the best way to meet the horrors of the world is with a jest, for if one can laugh at the worst life has to offer, there remains little to fear. His warm and friendly tavern does its best to live up to this admirable philosophy, down to the menu. Zokar has taken pains to come up with humorous names for his drinks and meals, with offerings like vampire steaks (cuts of beef skewered on thick wooden spikes), wolf balls (lamb meatballs served on plates painted to look like the face of the full moon), corpse chowder (a thick stew with red broth and chunks of meat), and liquid ghosts (a sweet pale ale that glows faintly with a greenish tint). As Zokar talks the lad runs a rag over an already clean table near the hearth that is big enough for all of you. He puts a bucket of biscuits that was keeping warm near the fire on a stone in the center of the table along with a crock of butter and a pot of honey.

Dannis slides his scimitar back into its scabbard, having immediately drawn the weapon as the spiders began their descent from the ceiling. With raised eyebrow, the cleric offers the barkeep a wry smile. "I'd say you got us with that one, my friend. Now, how about some of that Liquid Ghost?"

Vadim flinches as the spiders drop all around, visions of his expedition to that Ustalavan crypt with the Professor flashing through his mind. Steady, there, old man. You made it out alive . . .

Nevertheless, as the bartender reads off his grizzly list of repasts Vadim's tanned face grows pale . . . until he finally catches up. He laughs good naturedly as he sees the potential of such a clever ploy. "Aye, I'll have a mug of the Liquid Ghost as well. Just the thing to wash down a good Corpse Chowder!"

He takes a seat beside Besharnn and pats the half-orc heartily on the back as he leans forward and speaks softly into his ear. "Easy there, big fella. Just a clever man making the most of his situation."

Vadim was born in Varisia, the result of a brief union between a wandering bard and the charming Szarni elf who took his fancy . . . or perhaps the minstrel took the gypsy’s fancy, who can tell? In any case, their child proved to be beautiful, intelligent and precocious; it was plain to all who encountered young Vadim that he inherited the best of both of his parents.

As he grew to manhood, Vadim’s natural curiosity dovetailed with his interest in the history of Varisia and it’s neighbor, Ustalav. He began a lifelong study of the two cultures, of their conflict and influence on each other. Eventually, his studies brought him into contact with the famed scholar, Petros Lorrimor. He made contact with the Professor, and over the course of the next several years Vadim and Professor Lorrimor struck up a longstanding friendship. Correspondence by letter and occasional personal visits formed a bond between the two; the Professor’s knowledge enhanced Vadim’s, and his reputation earned the young half-elf a few guest lecturing posts at institutes of learning in Cheliax, Taldor and even Absalom.

During one of their personal visits – actually a joint venture to explore the ruins of a crypt in Ustalav – Vadim became the instrument of the aging Professor’s continued existence. Lorrimor, no longer as spry as he once was, had insisted that the two of them push on in spite of the fact that they’d been going without significant rest for two days. His exhaustion caused him to miss the trigger of a deadly poison dart trap; however, the now seasoned Vadim was quicker to react. His diving tackle broke Lorrimor’s arm and put an end to that particular foray – after a harrowing escape through the rugged Hungry Mountains – but also saved the man’s life. The end of that adventure was also the last time young Vadim saw the Professor alive . . .

Dannis reaches into a hidden pocket of his cloak, withdraws a platinum coin, and tosses it to the barkeep. "Does that cover us for the chowder and drinks, goodman?" Given the typical tavern prices he had seen in his travels, the cleric was reasonably certain that he was overpaying, but perhaps if they spread around a bit of coin it would help the townsfolk to take a liking to the group.

Falco shivers and freezes as the spiders fall onto his body. He is completely paralyzed with fear for a few seconds and then filled with adrenaline after that. He tries to calm his racing heart as he follows the others to the table.

As his listens to Zokar's explanation of his establishment's themeing, Falco listens attentively. Growing up with his parents running a similar establishment, Falco wholly appreciates Zokar's perspective on life and business.

He immediately grabs a biscuit and slathers on the butter.

"That Liquid Ghost sounds like it would be just the right companion for that Corpse Chowder. I'll take the drink now and the chowder when it's ready. By the way, I love the feel of this place my new friend. I am Falco and I suspect you might see us frequently while we are in town."
