There's usually going to be a way to drop that stuff in while maintaining story integrity. Adding it to the loot found in the last encounter before leveling, or in the next area explored, is the first that comes to mind. IIRC, in Crypt SK's character leveled with an encounter that killed a wizard. I think I remember simply altering the spells in the Wizards book to fit what SK wanted for his character, but I could be mistaken. That would work, though.
