Ed Greenwood to write 5E's Forgotten Realms

A recent DDI article seems to indicate that (original FR author) Ed Greenwood will be authoring the 5th Edition (D&D Next) version of the Forgotten Realms. The paragraph in question reads: "Recently I've seen petitions and strong arguments that Wizards should let Ed design the Forgotten Realms for the next edition of the game. I couldn't agree more, and some of that work is already under way. The Forgotten Realms has changed a lot in the last 25 years, and although there are major themes and ideas and flavors that haven't changed at all, in some ways the Realms has veered away from Ed's original vision. He's always been on board the Realms ship, but he hasn't always been at the rudder (to use his own metaphor), and we are rectifying that even as we speak. Keep your eyes out for some big announcements along those lines in the coming months."

You can find the quote in the article Book Wyrms: Elminster on WotC's website.

Note: unfortunately, while promoting this to a news article, I screwed up and the comments up until that point are now shown in an incorrect order. My apologies. I'll be more careful next time! - Morrus.

Anytime before 4e will work for me....otherwise I will just keep playing as if it never happened and have no reason (or want) to spend money.

Does anyone have any idea how much Ed Greenwood's vision of FR is different from TSR/WotC's?

No, I meant I am fine with any point up from 1E to the end of 3E for a relaunch. Even the ToT, for all the hamfisted "new rules, new world" changes it brought, was not as bad as the 4E debacle.

I would love to see a Forgotten Realms where Ed is at the helm, especially if they reboot the setting and roll it back to a prior edition before 3rd edition. In fact, that would be a deal breaker if they didn't, as I did not support the changes they made to the setting post 3rd edition.

When FR came out, we did not have the Lord of the Rings movies, God of War, World of Warcraft, or Game of Thrones. Times change.

Then again, Coca-Cola is still the same as ever (aside from that period of New Coke . . . and replacing sugar with high fructose corn syrup). People like Coke. The packaging has changed, but the core of the experience is the same.

So just repackage FR for the modern day.

    Then the realms remain dead.

(They don't have to retcon it, they can do a relaunch, comics and movies do that all the time.)

4E's changes killed the Realms. Ed should relaunch the timeline from some point prior to the end of 3E.

That's included in "prior to the end of 3E".

"A point prior to the end of 3E" includes 1E and 2E by definition.
